MADISON 63 DAVIS 9

MARSH VALLEY - The Madison Lionz opened up their 2003 campaign "fast and furious" and cruised to a convincing 63-9 victory over the UFL's Davis Vipers in pre-season RMFL action Saturday. The Lionz offense, behind new quarterback acquisition, Troy Dougherty (18-29-0-297-3), a four-year starter at Grinnel College, opened up with thier first drive as Dougherty connected with also newly acquired, Buck Mowser (8 receptions, 171 yards) (Rigby High) for a 50-yard touchdown pass. On the Lionz next possession, newly acquired tailback, Tony Jenks (52 total yards) completed a drive with a 4-yard touchdown run and on the Vipers ensuing drive, after going 3-and-out, the Vipers punt snap sailed out of the end zone giving Madison a quick 16-0 first quarter lead, and the rout was on. Also offensively, 2002 star quarterback, Dave Allen made a brilliant transition from star quarterback to wide receiver/running back/defensive back, coming up big rushing for 23 yards and a touchdown and catching 4 passes for 52 yards and a score.

The Madison defense came to play as well, lead by 2002 star safety Lewis Davis (5 tackles) who picked off 3 Davis passes, returning one later in the 4th quarter 38 yards for a touchdown to add insult to injury for a raw, but talented Davis squad. The Madison defensive line also dominated the game, as ex-Ricks college star, Andrew Ulberg (4 tackles, 1 sack) teamed up with another former Ricks star, Brandon Tuia (4 tackles, 1 sack). Also strong on the defensive line were two other former Ricks stars, Josh Huntsman (8 tackles) and Victor Martinez (5 tackles). The Lionz added enough new offensive line talent, that Martinez was able to be switched from offensive line to defensive line for the 2003 season. New linebacker core for the Madison Lionz also played brilliantly, including Brody Landon (8 tackles), Brody Atwood (4 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery).
