HELENA 21 TREASURE VALLEY 14

BOISE – Thanks to a little bit of wind, it was "Flag Day" in Treasure Valley Saturday as 32 yellow hankies dropped and almost 250 yards in penalties assessed as the Helena Titans held on for a 21-14 victory over the Treasure Valley Panthers in opening day action. The home town Panthers were hit with the worst of it, losing ground to the tune of 147 yards in penalties, circumventing what could have been a solid offensive ground show. The Titans, who struggled offensive in the first half, mustered a great 3rd quarter drive, capped off by a Shane Jurasek 1-yard touchdown run to tie the score. Then, on the second play of the fourth quarter got a big 46-yard touchdown romp from linebacker-converted fullback, Steve Kendall. Kendall's run was the biggest play of the day and put the Titans up to stay.

The Titans defense played solid throughout, capitalizing on the mistake-riddled Panther offense and the leadership of Spencer Steiner (9 tackles, 1/2 sack) and Justin and Travis Lamb (4-1/2 tackles each) in keeping the Panthers and Manzo Hodge at bay. Hodge had a great rushing performance for the Panthers, rushing for 92-yards on 7 carries, including a 25-yard touchdown romp at the end of the first half to give the Panthers the initial lead. Shawn Mares had a solid performance at fullback, rushing for 44 yards on 6 carries and catching the final touchdown pass of the game, a 22-yarder with 2 seconds remaining in the game. Panther quarterbacks, however, passed for a dismal 3 completions in 29 attempts. The Panther defense did get solid play out of Aaron Crawford (7 tackles) and Afa Faraimo (5 tackles, 1 interception) as well as iron man play from Hodge (4 tackles).
