Sean Powell returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown with less than 5 minutes to play in the 4th quarter to break open a tight 27-22 game and lead the Idaho Falls Mustangs to their sixth consecutive opening day victory 42-22, in their six year existence. After a hard-fought, roller-coaster first half seeing the lead change 4 times, the Idaho Falls Mustangs pulled away late over a determined Helena Titan franchise destined to make some serious RMFL noise in 2002. The Mustangs were lead by stars, quarterback Cody Jackson (63 rushing yards, 201 passing yards, 3 touchowns), Powell (3 touchdowns) Rayce Bird (154 yards rushing) and Ron Childs (6-1/2 tackles, 2 sacks). The Titans were lead by a gamey performance by quarterback Shane Jurasek (63 yards rushing, 1 TD) and ex-Bozeman Kodiak defensive players, Spencer Steiner (8-1/2 tackles) and Frank Cannon (8-1/2 tackles). The Mustangs next go on the road to play the reeling Fort Hall Cobras (0-2) and the Titans open at home against the surging Boise Roughriders (3-0).
