HELENA 19 GREAT FALLS 18

GREAT FALLS – It has often been a cliche in football, particularly at the professional level, that "Special Teams" can win... or lose games. On Saturday, in Great Falls, Montana, the Great Falls Gladiators did it all to defeat their intra-state rivals at home, except one thing... that's right, special teams. The Gladiators could not convert on three point-after-toucdown attempts, and then, finally, the losing points went to the Helena Titans on a fourth quarter punt that was snapped over the Gladiator punter's head and out of the end zone: Helena - two points. Helena wins.... 19-18. The Gladiators did mount one last minute drive in the closing minutes, set up by a Michael Rhode fumble recovery of a Helena fumble. After a first down, ex-star tailback, Hollis Huggins of the Titans picked off a Dee Jones pass to cement the win for the Titans.

The Gladiators did have a positive special teams play when Teejay Peterson blocked a Bryan Hilborn field goal in the second quarter, setting up the Gladiators first touchdown, a 2-yard run by the very same Peterson. Peterson, who is the teams back-up quarterback, was set up by a 66-yard romp by Gladiator starting quarterback, Dee Jones. With the score 7-6 Helena in the second quarter, Peterson pulled out another big special teams play when he blocked Titan punter, Bryan Hilborn (again) near the Titan 11; the ball rocketed into the end zone and Peterson completed the hat trick by falling on the ball to put the Gladiators ahead until the botched punt of their own in the 4th quarter.

The passing game was relatively non-existent on the windy afternoon in Great Falls. Big rushing performances were turned in by Helena's Donny Kaneshiro who went for 113 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns. Aided by the 66-yard break-away, Gladiator quarterback, Dee Jones rushed for 94 yards on 7 carries; and not to be outdone, Titan quarterback, Shane Jurasek romped for 63 yards on 9 carries. As the Gladiators got big defensive performances from Barton (9 tackles, 1 sack) and Teejay Peterson (4.5 tackles, blocked field goal and punt), the Titans were boosted by linebacker, Travis Lamb who recorded 8 tackles in the absence of Helena's usual "man around the ball", Spencer Steiner who could not make the game.
