May 4, 2002 Helena Titans vs. Mini-Cassia Bulldawgs
MINI-CASSIA 22 HELENA 21
RUPERT - Chris Hanni intercepted 3 Shane Jurasek passes, running one back for the Bulldawgs first touchdown and Mike Manning lead the Bulldawgs on a last minute drive, connecting with reigning RMFL MVP, Lonnie Edwards for a touchdown as well as the winning 2-point conversion as the Mini-Cassia Bulldawgs pulled off the upset over the Helena Titans 22-21 in a riveting RMFL match-up. The Bulldawg defense played big behind Hanni, Alan Hakes (8 tackles) and Ruben Alverez (5 tackles, 2 sacks) and just strong overall defensive effort as they intercepted the Titans 6 times and sacked Jurasek 4 times under constant pressure. Mike Manning (12-32-3-232-1) had another strong performance, particularly on the winning drive, however was victimized once again by numorous dropped passes. Bulldawg fullback, Jacob Zemke had a breakthrough day for the Bulldawg rushing attack, becoming the Bulldawgs first 100-yard rusher this season. The Titans got another all-star performance from tailback, former CFLer, Hollis Huggins, who scored all three Helena touchdowns, and wide receiver Lucas Anderson, who went over 100 yards receiving and also picked off a Mike Manning pass while doing some spot defensive back work. But ultimately, the game came down to kicking... or lack thereof. Titans all-star kicker, Bryan Hilborn missed what would have been the game-clinching 25-yard field goal, a relative chip-shot for Hilborn who has connected from over 50-yards and often from over 40 in his career. The Bulldawgs, on the other hand, who admittedly do not have a kicker, eliminated that as an option after scoring on the Manning to Edwards touchdown pass with less than 3 minutes to play, making the score 21-20 in favor of Helena at that time. For the conversion attempt, Manning rolled out looking for Junior Hale who was well covered in the corner, before threading the needle of two Titans for the winning 2-point conversion to Edwards. Then the Bulldawgs defense prevailed against a furious Titan drive to get into field goal position to win the game in the end. The Bulldawgs (2-3) next travel to Boise to take on the Treasure Valley Panthers (1-3), as the Titans (2-2) stay home to take on the defending RMFL champion, Pocatello Silverbacks (4-1).
