POCATELLO 40 SALT LAKE 8

ARIMO - The Pocatello Silverbacks secured a first round home playoff game by defeating the Salt Lake Stallions 40-8. The Salt Lake Stallions secured permanent respect from semi-pro football observers all over the rockies with a complete season "ordeal" which included 7 road games to 6 different RMFL locations. The Stallions secured respect and, to a certain extent, anticipation as to what kind of a team they can build on with a talented core of players in the off-season. The Silverbacks finished the season 5-3, the Stallions finished the season as a simple pre-logue of things to come in 2004.

The Silverbacks started slow, scoring only once in the first quarter off a Troy Sutton (10 carries, 95 yards, 2 touchdowns, 20 receiving yards) touchdown run. Then, a second quarter flourish put the Stallions away. Reigning offensive MVP, Brock Gunter had another monster day with 184 yards on 8 receptions and 2 touchdowns. Quarterback, Jeff Belnap passed for 209 yards and 3 touchdowns before giving way to his back-up, Brad Horsley midway through the third quarter.

Defensively, the Silverbacks were once again, lead by defensive MVP candidate, Trent Sutton who recorded 9-1/2 tackles and another interception, this time, racing 50 yards with it for paydirt. Because the Stallions did achieve some success on the ground, rushing for a team record 188 yards on 40 rushes, there were plenty of tackles to spread around. Chris Howerton had 5-1/2, BJ Crangle and Jonny Fisher each had 5 for the Silverbacks. Fisher also had 2 interceptions.

The Stallions played perhaps one of their best games of the year as the offense showed some real life. Tailback/defensive back, Billy Davis, however proved his all-star worthiness with perhaps the best performance of the day. Davis rushed for 96 yards (on 16 carries), had 38 reception yards and was second in the team in tackles (with 6), while recording the teams only sack. Fullback/linebacker Mike Sagapolutelle and all-star, Ryan Bird also had big 2-way games. Sagapolutelle rushed for 57 yards on 12 carries and recorded 4 tackles. Ryan Bird lead the team in tackles with 10 and rushed for 21 yards on 7 carries on offense. The Stallions were hampered, however, with an inability to muster a decent passing attack. Besides Davis' 38-yard catch and run, the Stallions had but 4 passing yards to go with 5 interceptions. Stallion quarterbacks completed 5 passes to Silverbacks and only 2 to Stallions.
