April 19th, 2003 Pocatello Silverbacks vs. Snake River Rebels
SNAKE RIVER 26 POCATELLO 15
FORT HALL - It was billed as "The Game of the Week" and played out like a heavy-weight boxing match. It was as if two skilled prize fighters kept landing blows, but nothing serious enough to put the other down... and then... in the 15th round, a flurry of blows from both directions until when the final bell rang, the Snake River Rebels "out-pointed" the Pocatello Silverbacks 26-15. The game was a pure pleasure to watch to see great defense and great offense on a beautiful sunny afternoon in Fort Hall, Idaho.
The Rebels struck first, and quickly on a 2-yard Kade Shawver touchdown; which was set up by the first offensive play of the game, a play-fake to Shawver and then a 38-yard strike from newly acquired quarterback, Preston Kelley (7-18-2-125-0) to a wide open Aaron Blakely down the left sideline. It looked as if the game would be a scoring fest... and it was... in the fourth quarter. For the better part of 3 quarters (1st, 2nd and 3rd), the teams spent time moving the football, but not scoring; the Rebels having more rushing success, the Silverbacks more passing success. The score was 6-0 with barely 2 minutes run off the clock in the first, and remained 6-0 going into the 4th quarter; then the fireworks went off.
First, Snake River capped an early 4th quarter drive, aided by a 19-yard Kelley to Travis Goodwin (4 receptions, 62 yards) pass with a 7-yard Egbert touchdown run; with that and a 2-point Austin Shawver run, the Rebels went up 14-0 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. On the Silverbacks ensuing possession, after a quick first down, the Silverback drive stalled and Jeff Belnap set up to punt. It would be the Silverbacks first punt of the game against a tough Rebel defense. Barrett Beck broke through for the Rebels and blocked Belnap's punt and was the first to the football as it dribbled into the end zone. Rebels 20, Silverbacks 0. The Silverbacks would not give up, however as Belnap (20-38-3-302-2) found his favorite target, RMFL Offensive MVP, Brock Gunter (8 catches, 144 yards) up the right sideline for a 48-yard score to pull Pocatello to within 20-7 with about 5 minutes to go in the contest. Then, Rebel head coach, Tom Harrison made an appearence for the Rebel offense, at quarterback. Harrison lead a rebel drive completing 4 oout of 4 passes for 45 yards, including a 22-yard strike to Adam Egbert. With the Rebels at 2nd and goal from the Silverback 1-yard line, the 42-year old Harrison took it in himself to put the Rebels up by 26-7 with about a minute and a half remaining. Pocatello struck one more time as Belnap found Troy Sutton (110 total yards, 31 rushing, 79 receiving) on a last ditch 60-yard catch and run touchdown to cap a wild 4th quarter making the score 26-15 final.
Some great defensive performances were turned in by both teams. For the Silverbacks, Trent Sutton recorded 7-1/2 tackles and a diving interception, Cameron Hicks had 7 tackles from the cornerback spot and Jonny Fisher and Jake Ball each had 6 tackles a piece. For the Rebels, Jeb Harrison recorded 9 tackles and an interception, Jack Phippen 6 tackles and an interception and Dustin Aldous recorded 4 tackles and the Rebels third pick of Pocatello's MVP quarterback, Jeff Belnap.
