RUPERT - The Pocatello defense made came through in the clutch, preventing a game-winning two-point conversion pass from Mini-Cassia's Mike Manning with the score 21-20, and third-string tailback, Troy Sutton rushed for 94 yards and two touchdowns to help the Pocatello Silverbacks recover from a 14-8 halftime deficit to overcome the Mini-Cassia Bulldawgs 21-20 to secure the #1 seed in the 2002 RMFL playoffs. The Silverbacks, missing both Reggie Jackson and Jared Anderson, turned to defensive back, Sutton who responded with the big game. Jeff Belnap also completed a strong season, throwing for more than 200 yards for the 6th time in the last 6 games. The Silverback defense had several stars, not the least of which was Jamon Rivera, who picked off a Mike Manning pass in the third quarter and raced 20-yards for a touchdown to extend the Silverback lead to 21-14, the play that would hold up as the game winner. The Bulldawgs got just another 300+ yard game from all-star quarterback, Mike Manning, his 4th 300-yard game in a record shattering season. Robert Carrick caught 3 passes for 95 yards, including a 55-yard game breaking touchdown reception with 9:56 remaining in the game to put the Bulldawgs in position to win the game. Alan Hakes (13 tackles, 1 interception) and Fernando Vale (9 tackles) lead the Bulldawg defense in keeping Pocatello's explosive offense in check. Both teams qualify for the Playoffs, Pocatello (7-1) gets a bye week and awaits either Boise, Helena or a rematch with the Bulldawgs. The Bulldawgs (3-5) draw the Helena Titans (3-5) in Mini-Cassia for a first round playoff rematch of a game settled similarly, 22-21 going to the Bulldawgs.
