April 27, 2002 Boise Roughriders vs. Pocatello Silverbacks
POCATELLO 30 BOISE 6
Former Fort Hall Cobra, Reggie Jackson had a break-out game, rushing for 157 yards and a touchdown and Brandon Palmer emerged from the shadow of perennial league all-star Brock Gunter, to catch 8 passes for 165 yards and a touchdown, as the Pocatello Silverbacks defeated their old RMFL nemesis, Boise Roughriders 30-6 in a 2001 championship rematch game, to become the only undefeated team in the RMFL in 2002. Ironically, as Pocatello becomes the leagues only undefeated team, they do so against the only team that has ever beaten the Silverbacks, having lost to the Roughriders 21-18 last season in Boise. After jumping out front early 7-0 lead on a Belnap to Gunter touchdown pass, the Roughriders fought back with Tom Bennett connecting with Denver Leeds to make the score 7-6 early in the second period before Pocatello's offense really got rolling. The Silverback defense played exceptional, shutting down the Roughrider rushing attack and sacking Bennett 10 times during the game. Chris Howerton (8 tackles, 3 sacks) and Troy Sutton (8 tackles, 1 interception) lead the way on defense for the Silverbacks. Jeff Belnap had another exceptional day, passing for 274 yards and two touchdowns. Boise's Tom Bennett also had a strong performance for his first start of the season, when he wasn't being sacked, passed for 221 yards, including 132 yards to all-star receiver, Chance Leeds. The Roughrider defense continues to be lead by Terance King (9 tackles, 1 fumble recovery) and Donald Nelson (8 tackles) as well as Casey Wittenborn (5-1/2 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery). The Silverbacks (4-0) now take their show on the road against the Snake River Rebels (2-1), while the Roughriders (1-3, 3-3 overall) prepare for a potential bye week match-up against the independant, Weber Renegades (0-2).
