SNAKE RIVER 16 BOISE 7

FORT HALL - The Boise Roughriders vindicated their number one defensive ranking, the Snake River Rebels, however, got the win 16-7. After getting pummelled 52-0 in 2002 by the Rebels, the Roughriders showed what a difference a year makes hanging with the Rebels for 4 quarters on proving themselves to be another championship contender in 2003. The Rebels, were always considered a championship contender and all but assured themselves of a first round bye and a #2 seed in the RMFL playoffs with the win.

For the first game this season, the Rebels turned to the swift, Adam Egbert for the workload on offense and Egbert responded with a big 120 yard game on 21 carries. Egbert, however, was the lone bright spot for the Rebel offense, which was held to one touchdown in the game for the first time in Snake River Rebel history. Jared Thomas' 1-yard plunge in the third quarter turned out to be the decisive score as the Rebels took command of an 8-7 game to go up 16-7.

Boise struck first early in the second quarter when Roughrider fullback, Austin Callison showed his speed, with a 57-yard touchdown romp threw the Rebel defense to put the Roughriders up 7-0. The Rougrider defense lead, once again, by Zac Jockumsen (15 tackles, 1 sack) continued to shut the Rebel offense down in the first half. The Rebels, however, would strike on defense, when Rebel cornerback, Chase Beck jumped a Tom Bennett pass and returned it 25-yards to bring the Rebels to within 7-6. Adam Egbert ran in the conversion for the kicker-less Rebels to put the home team up 8-7 for the first time. It would turn out to be all the points the Rebels would need in the low scoring affair.

The Rebel defense was spear-headed by Charlie Bair (6 tackles, interception), T.J. Bingham (5 tackles), Matt Chidester (5 tackles, 2 sacks) and Chase Beck (4 tackles, interception/touchdown). As a team, the Rebels recorded 5 quarterback sacks and two interceptions on Roughrider quarterbacks in holding the red and black to a single score for the game. Aside from Callison's big run, the Roughrider did get a solid performance, once again, from tailback, Cherone Schneider (51 yards rushing) and Tom Bennett passed for over 100 yards on the day. Aside from another big game from linebacker Jockumsen, the Roughriders also got big contributions from Dane Knickrehm (6-1/2 tackles) and Curt Haldeman (3-1/2 tackles, 2 sacks) in a great defensive performance. Overall, the Roughriders out-gained the Rebels 242 to 206 total net yards on the day.
