IDAHO FALLS - The Idaho Falls Mustangs recovered from an early 7-0 hole after the first quarter, as Mustang quarterback Cody Jackson (9 rushes, 74 yards, 138 passing yards) and Russell Cummins (2 touchdowns) lead a second quarter surge to put the home Mustangs ahead by a 20-7 halftime score and then cruised in for a 34-9 victory over the improved Boise Roughriders. Newly annointed Mustang tailback and league-leading rusher, Jake Scouten had another impressive game, rushing for 96 yards on 14 carries and catching 4 passes for 51 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown pass from Jackson as the second quarter was winding down and with the Mustangs holding a precarious 12-7 lead.

After the Mustangs recovered in the second quarter and gained momentum in taking the 20-7 lead and then extended it to 27-7 midway through the third, they almost lost it on consecutive poor punt snaps later in the third quarter. With 3:08 remaining in the third quarter and the Mustangs up 27-7, Mustang long-snapper, Steve Burch sailed a punt snap over the head of Mustang punter, Jeff Waetje, by the time Waetje could chase it down, he was downed by Boise on the Mustangs 10-yard line. The Mustangs defense stiffened as their secondary, lead by Josh Richardson, Justin Weaver, Rico Chacon, and Josh Roth kept the Roughriders out as they took 3 passing shots at the end zone before settling for a 27-yard Matthew Tefs field goal attempt...that was partially blocked and missed. After the Mustangs took over after the field goal attempt, and inspired Boise defense shut down the Mustangs forcing another punt deep in Mustang territory. Burch, an outstanding ex-collegiate offensive linemen, then sailed another snap over Waetje's outstretched hands, only this time out of the end zone scoring 2 points for the Red and Black Roughriders. After that point, the Roughriders just couldn't connect on numerous pass attempts throughout the game as they scrambled to come back.

The Mustang defense was solid throughout getting a perfect team effort as 11 Mustangs recorded 2 or more tackles. No Mustang recorded more than 5 tackles (Mike Jensen and Travis Perez). Although, the Mustang defensive line only recorded two sacks, pressure caused Roughrider quarterbacks to often mis-fire, and/or throw into solid tight coverage. The Roughrider defense was lead once again by ex-Idaho Falls High player, Zac Jockumsen who recorded another 14-1/2 tackles on the game, following a league record-setting 16-1/2 tackles last week against the Pocatello Silverbacks. In the game, starting quarterback, James Manderscheid was pulled late in the second quarter and ex-starting Roughrider quarterback, Tom Bennett inserted for the remainder of the game.
