SNAKE RIVER 50 SALT LAKE 6

SALT LAKE CITY – In early October of 1999, the Idaho Falls Mustangs played the Great Falls Rangers in Great Falls, Montana in a game which became known as the "Mud Bowl". Snowfall and rain had turned the field into a quagmire and the players struggled to get footing. Saturday, in Salt Lake City, Utah at Granite High School, "Mud Bowl II" was played between the Snake River Rebels and the Salt Lake Stallions. Unlike the first Mud Bowl in which the Rangers eeked out a 13-12 victory over the Mustangs, this game wasn't even close. After the Stallions pulled out a trick play for a 40-yard pass from Tommy Gonzalas to Daron Cooper on the first offensive play of the game to take a 6-0 lead, it was all Rebels. The Rebels dominated throughout in the snow, rain and mud in running up (literally) 372 yards of offense against the Stallions who had a mere 45, 40 of which you remember came on the first play from scrimmage. Four Rebel rushers ran for more than 50 yards, Kade Shawver (84 yards), Austin Shawver (73 yards), Shawn Freeman (72 yards) and Travis Boden (53 yards) as the Snake River ground game took advantage of the conditions and tore through the Stallion defense. Kade Shawver and Travis Boden each scored two touchdowns for a Rebel offense that distributed the ball around very well.

The stifling Rebel defense was lead by Jake Phippen (5 tackles, 1 sack), Charlie Bair (4 tackles) and Jeb Harrison (3 tackles, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 interception) as the Rebels team defense shut down the home team throughout the game. The Stallions did get a solid defensive performance from a few players. Bryan Bird recorded 7 tackles, Andrew Butler 6, And Jason Hermansen 5-1/2. After the first big play, the Stallions couldn't complete a pass as the ball became coated and difficult to grip. Somehow, Rebel quarterback, Logan Cobb was able to complete 4 passes, including two touchdown passes of his own in the middle of the slop. "Passes looked like throwing a shot put out there," observed Rebel defensive end, Jeb Harrison, "that was THE muddiest game I have EVER played in!!" According to Russ Brown, Stallion head coach, "200 die hard football fans sat through rain and snow to watch the mud bowl". This weekend should be much better...
