April 26th, 2003 Snake River Rebels vs. Treasure Valley Panthers

TREASURE VALLEY 17 SNAKE RIVER 12

BOISE - And then there was two... Tim Salazar caught a 60-yard pass from Manzo Hodge with 6:36 remaining in the 4th quarter to help the Treasure Valley Panthers become only the second Idaho team to escape with a victory over the vaunted, Snake River Rebels, edging the Rebels in a tight battle in Boise, 17-12. The Panthers got just enough offense, just enough special teams and just enough turnovers to pull the trick. The Treasure Valley Panthers benefited from 4 Rebel turnovers, a 50-yard Justen Roberts punt return for touchdown, solid performances from Manzo Hodge (7 carries, 57 yards, 109 yards passing, 1 touchdown) and Shawn Mares (7 carries, 44 yars) and solid kicking from Eric Harveson (1 field goal, 2 extra points). The Rebels actually out-yardaged the Panthers 289 to 204 (60 of which from the Salazar touchdown), out-first-downed the Panthers 18-6 and rushed the ball for a team total of 236 yards. Rebel tailback, Travis Boden had a monster day, rushing for 181 yards on 35 carries.

The Rebels opened up the game by fumbling the opening kickoff over to the Panthers. The Panthers, however, returned the favor shortly thereafter... and that set the tone for the game. The teams went back and forth exchanging scores and the lead until the game-breaking play in the 4th quarter. The Rebels were often hurt by the dreaded "yellow hanky", getting flagged for 160 yards in penalties, many of which were "unsportsmanlike conduct" infractions. The Panthers defense got solid efforts in particular from Aaron Crawford (10 tackles, Afa Faraimo (7 tackles) and Travis Hobson (4.5 tackles, 2.5 sacks). The Rebels got the big offensive performance from Boden and defensively, although stuffed the Panthers as a unit, got particular strong play from Jack Phippen (5 tackles, 1 interception), Jeb Harrison (5 tackles, 2 sacks), Charlie Bair (4 tackles) and Dustin Aldous (4 tackles, 1 interception). Aaron Blakely provided a nice all-around game for the Rebels with 32 rushing yards, 35 receiving yards on offense and recovering two fumbles on defense.
