April 20, 2002 Idaho Falls Mustangs vs. Pocatello Silverbacks

POCATELLO - Brock Gunter caught touchdown passes of 30, 40 and 60 yards from Silverback quarterback Jeff Belnap as the defending RMFL champions escaped with a hard-earned 29-19 victory over a highly motivated Idaho Mustang football team. The Mustangs were defeated by the Silverbacks in an exhibition game in August of 2002 34-6, however, head coach Jack Klein and several key players were not at that game. This time, the Mustangs were sworn to make a statement. Despite a great effort from Gunter (6 receptions, 173 yards), Belnap (11-20-3-238-3) and a solid offensive line that didn't allow a single sack to the sack-happy Mustang defense, the Mustangs may have contribute most to their own demise, losing 7 turnovers (5 interceptions, 2 fumbles) and being penalized 16 times for 160 yards. A key turning point occured early in the fourth quarter when an attempted "shovel pass" from Cody Jackson went errant and Silverback linebacker, Al Covington ended up with the football. The officials ruled that the ball never touched the ground and Covington was credited with an interception. That turnover gave the Silverbacks possession, still down 19-16, before Belnap found Gunter for the 60-yard catch and run that put the Silverbacks in the lead to stay, 23-19. The Mustangs (2-1) now prepare to face the up-and-coming Madison Lionz (3-0) in Madison while the Silverbacks (3-0) stay home for their final home game against their 2001 nemesis, Boise Roughriders (1-2).
