MADISON 33 POCATELLO 20

MARSH VALLEY – Newly acquired Madison quarterback, Troy Dougherty lead a spirited second half comeback as the Madison Lionz erased a 20-6 halftime deficit to score 27 unanswered points against the 2001 RMFL champion, Pocatello Silverbacks to capture the 2003 opener, 33-20. Dougherty accounted for 300 total yards of offense (267 passing, 33 rushing) and wide receiver, Buck Mouser caught 8 passes for 102 yards in leading a brilliant second half offensive output. Madison's defense was also strong in shutting down a potent Silverback attack. Brock Gunter, who caught 7 passes for 101 yards and 3 touchdowns in erupting in the second quarter, was shut down in the second half as Madison defensive captain, Lewis Davis made a key adjustment by switching ex-starting quarterback, Dave Allen into coverage on Gunter, as well as additional saftey help in the second half.

Madison tailback, Tony Jenks also looked impressive, rushing for 59 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown run through the heart of the Pocatello defense to tie the game midway through the third period. Besides Lewis Davis (2.5 tackles, 1 interception), the Madison defense was lead by the Landon cousins, Brodie with 6 tackles and Matt with 5 tackles and an interception, the final interception came with 3 minutes to go in the game and Pocatello driving to draw closer, that put the game away. The Pocatello defense got a big effort, in a losing cause from Jonny Fisher who recorded 10-1/2 tackles on the day. Head Coach Shawn O'Hearn also answered some speculation on his retirement by suting up and playing most of the game on the offensive line for the Silverbacks which became invaluable in giving quarterback, Jeff Belnap protection. The 27 unanswered points and the second half comeback was very reminiscent of the 2001 championship game in which the Silverbacks were down 17-6 at the half and came back to win 48-20 over the Boise Roughriders. It was also a little payback for the second year Lionz who held a 17-6 halftime edge over the S-backs in 2002 before Jeff Belnap lead a second half comeback of his own to score 14 unanswered points and edge the Lionz 20-17.
