MADISON 29 SNAKE RIVER 26

MORELAND - It finally happened. Snake River lost to another Idaho team, more surprising yet, a first year expansion team. Several myths also went to the wayside in the Madison 29-26 victory over the heralded Rebels. Myth One, "If Snake River gets up big and early, it's all over". Madison dispelled that myth by recovering from an early 14-0 hole to come back and score 29 unanswered points in the game. Myth Two: "If you get the Rebels down, they will fall apart". The Rebels fought back proudly and ferociously in the fourth quarter after Madison went ahead in the game 29-14. In fact, Snake River had the ball inside Madison territory at the 20-yard line as time expired in the game. Myth Three: Snake River can't be beat in Idaho. So many proud teams have tried... and failed. The outcome was always the same, Snake River wins, Snake River wins, Snake River wins. This time, the talented Rebels had to walk off their home field short on the scoreboard for the first time.... ever for many of them. The Lionz had several heros in the victory. Most obvious was quarterback Dave Allen, who's scrambling, running and throwing accounted for the "lionz" share of the Madison yardage, not to mention every touchdown. Madison punter, Dave Jensen, should also receive a lot of credit. Madison punted 4 times, 3 times the snap sailed over his head for certain catastrophe. Each time he ran down the ball, got to it quickly, set and hit booming punts on the run to save valuable field position that might have meant the game. The Lionz offensive line performed admirably, giving Allen the time needed to be productive against a tough Rebel defense, but perhaps the mettle of Madison's defense was the biggest reason. After getting burned early and often on big runs by the patented Rebel running game behind Travis Boden (13 carries, 86 yds), Austin Shawver (4 for 56 yards) and Kade Shawver (13 carries, 72 yards), the Lionz defensemen, behind a solid team of tacklers solved the Rebel rushing attack and shut them down most of the rest of the game, allowing for the offensive comeback. The Rebel defense was lead by big games from Reiker Blakely, Charlie Bair, Jake Phippen, Jeb Harrison and long-time Rebel quarterback-turned-defensiveback, Jeff Dalley, who started the scoring picking off an Allen pass and racing 60-yards for a touchdown midway through the first quarter. The Lionz (3-0) now must prepare for another impossible task, the Idaho Falls Mustangs (2-1) while the Rebels (2-1) must regroup before taking on Pocatello (3-0)on May 4th.
