June 15, 2002 Madison Lionz vs. Idaho Falls Mustangs
2002 RMFL Semi-Final Playoff Game
IDAHO FALLS 13 MADISON 0
IDAHO FALLS - The Idaho Falls Mustangs and Madison Lionz defenses came to play. Unfortunately for the Madison Lionz, Mustang quarterback Cody Jackson also came to play. Jackson sprinted out around left end for a 22-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter that turned out to be the game-winning score in a game mired by a strong defensive effort from both teams. Jackson passed for 197 yards and lead the Mustangs in rushing with 75 yards on 7 carries in providing the offensive key for the Mustangs. Once again, the Mustang defense was lead by former NFL linebacker, Ron Childs who recorded 10-1/2 tackles and a sack of Lionz quarterback, Dave Allen who was pressured throughout the game. The Lionz got huge games out of Andrew Ulberg who recorded 9 tackles and a sack and Spencer French who recorded 5-1/2 tackles and a sack of his own.
At several several points, key penalties,no calls and a controversial anti-climatic touchdown came into play in the game. Jackson's touchdown in the first quarter seemed to have been broken open by a "take down" of Lionz end, Spencer French and a grab of outside linebacker, Rodney Peach. However, later in the second quarter, an apparent Sean Powell touchdown reception was called back by a holding penalty on the Mustang offensive line. Amidst the usual officiating complaints from both sides of the field, perhaps the game will be most remembered for an unprecedented conclusion. With the Mustangs ahead 7-0 and the Lionz out of timeouts, the Mustangs appeared to prepare to have quarterback, Cody Jackson "kneel out the clock". In fact, after Jackson took the first knee and the Lionz used their last timeout, Jackson appeared to prepare to kneel down on the second play, but then stood up, dropped back and fired up the sideline to a wide open Scott Johnson for a cosmetic score. Lionz players were severely miffed at the call, claiming that the Mustangs declared on the field they were going to just "kneel down, so don't hit the quarterback". The Mustangs claim to have taken exception to the "line crashing" that the Lionz did after the first kneel down and then the fruitless timeout call. Regardless, the touchdown only gave the Lionz a sliver of hope which faded as a final desperation prayer thrown up by Dave Allen after a good Trevor Harris kickoff return, was only answered with a Tom Shawcroft interception. The teams played well and a hard-fought game was just out-fought by the Mustangs (7-2) who will now advance to play in the RMFL championship for the fourth time against the Pocatello Silverbacks (8-1).
