May 10th, 2003 Madison Lionz vs. Mini-Cassia Bulldawgs

MADISON 72 MINI-CASSIA 20

RUPERT - Troy Dougherty threw 6 touchdown passes, 4 of those to his favorite target, Buck Mouser as the Madison Lionz jumped what had previously been the RMFL's number 1 ranked defense in an offensive explosion for a 72-20 rout. Dougherty passed for 403 yards and Mouser caught 7 passes for 164 yards and the 4 touchdowns as the Lionz offense took advantage of every opportunity turned over to them by their defense... and then some as they defeated the only remaining team with a winning record on their schedule. The Lionz have now beaten Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Snake River and Mini-Cassia on their way to a perfect 6-0 mark in league play, 8-0 record overall.

The spirited Bulldawgs came into the game, billed as "the Number 1 offense vs. the Number 1 defense", however, when the Bulldawgs own offense turned the ball over quickly deep in their own territory on their first two possessions, it became a long night early. Madison took the opening kickoff and drove 68 yards for the first score, the first Mouser touchdown reception. On the second play of the Bulldawgs first possession, Mike Manning and Lonnie Edwards fumbled the exchange and the Lionz recovered, setting up Dougherty's second touchdown pass. On the Bulldawgs first play of the next possession, Manning was forced out of the pocket for the first of about a dozen successful Junior Falavai blitzes and forced the ball into coverage, more specifically the arms of Lionz' Greg Givens, setting up the Lionz third quick touchdown. With barely 7 minutes off the clock, the Lionz already lead 21-0.

The Bulldawgs would make a minor comeback, however, when after the Lionz picked up a Dougherty scramble touchdown run to go up 28-0, Manning (21-39-3-332-3) moved the Bulldawgs quickly on two quick drives, resulting in touchdown passes to Justin Hunter (7 catches, 92 yards) and Dallas Hakes (7 catches, 165 yards, 2 touchdowns). Hakes came up big on the night in several occasions as the Bulldawg running game had ground to a halt with only 45 total yards on the ground. After the second score, the Bulldawgs had drawn to within 28-14 before a couple more Dougherty to Mouser touchdown passes sandwiched around a Tagg Williams interception return of a Manning pass put the game away 50-14 by halftime. Dougherty's 6 touchdown passes tied the single game record held by Great Falls', Shane Jurasek and the 6 touchdowns added to the 18 he had coming into the game, gives him 24 touchdown passes on the season, eclipsing the previous season record held by Jeff Belnap at 21. Mouser's 4 touchdowns was the the first 4 receiving touchdown game in RMFL history.

In an offensive game of this magnitude it is more difficult to highlight defensive stars. For Madison, middle linebacker, Junior Falavai was the story. Falavai came in on numerous blitzes untouched, recorded two sacks, chased Manning constantly and forced a number of incomplete passes and all three Manning interceptions. Tagg Williams also had a solid day with two interceptions and 4-1/2 tackles. Matt Landon lead the team with 5-1/2 tackles to go with a pick of his own.
