UTAH 9 BOISE 7

BOISE - With just less than 2 minutes remaining in the game and the Boise Roughriders with the ball and the lead over the Utah Blitz 7-6, all the Roughrider offense needed to do was NOT FUMBLE the ball. And so that is exactly what happened. As the Blitz took possession on the Boise 25 yard-line, the Roughrider defense needed to make one more stop. And so they did. Not until after the Blitz completed a 20-yard pass, however putting them at the Roughrider 5-yard line. The Roughriders stopped the Utah Blitz and their mammoth sized offensive line on three straight plays setting up a game winning 25-yard field goal. It was a 25-yard attempt (and not a 22 or 23-yard attempt) because earlier in the game, the Roughrider broke through and blocked a Blitz field goal attempt. This time, Blitz coach Jeff Labounty, wanted to make sure his kicker had time... and he did. With 14 ticks on the clock, the kick sailed up and over the left upright... somewhere. After a brief delay, game officials ruled the kick good and the Utah Blitz eked out an exciting 9-7 come-from-behind victory over the RMFL's vastly improved Boise Roughriders.

During the game, the Roughriders actually made two other great goal line stands. The first resulted in the blocked field goal attempt, while the second was a pass picked off by newly acquired, Zac Jockumsen, an Idaho Falls High School graduate, who out-raced everyone for an electrifying 102-yard interception return to paydirt putting the Roughriders up 7-0 midway through the third quarter. The Roughriders struggled on offense, throughout, however, as the Blitz brought tremendous pressure into the backfield in the first half and after the Roughriders adjusted to give quarterback, Tom Bennett more time in the second half, he wasn't able to connect. "It was very frustrating," said head coach Chuck Hudson, "we had the open receivers in that second half and time to throw. Tom just couldn't connect this time." Hudson however, did give the Blitz defense plenty of props, "they have a very strong and big offense, but their defense is definitely their strength. They have a lot of great players on defense. We just couldnt'take advantage of the few opportunities they gave us."
