July 28th, 2001 RMFL West All-Stars vs. RMFL East All-Stars
EAST 34 WEST 27
2001 Rushing Champion, Tyler Wheatley rushed for 4 touchdowns as the East defense fought off a valient come-back attempt by the West to hold on for a 34-27 victory in the 4th annual RMFL All-Star classic. Wheatley rushed for 74 yards on 11 carries and Silverback teammate, Brock Gunter caught 4 passes for 80 yards and a 51-yard touchdown reception himself as the East squad recovered from an early 19-0 hole through most of the first half to outscore the West 34-8 in the last 2 quarters+ to emerge with the All-Star title. Fort Hall's Reggie "Ju-Ju" Jackson, who was named the RMFL's top defensive back at halftime, paced a strong East defense with 5 tackles and 2 interceptions. Jackson also returned kicks and kicked off for the East. The West was lead offensively by Mike "Money" Manning who passed for almost 100 yards in limited action and had a couple of good scramble runs. But a surprise performance by Roughrider linebacker, Bill Martin, who in the absence of teammate Rocky Lopez, rushed for 58 yards on 7 carries including an incredible 35-yard, tackle-breaking touchdown run midway through the second quarter stole the show. The West defense was lead by Bulldawgs, Ron Jones (7 tackles) and Mario "Mars" Labra (5 tackles) and Donald Nelson (4 tackles, 1 interception).
The game started off as if the West was going to dominate the East on a route, jumping out to a quick 19-0 lead on 2 short Jim Slocum field goals, a 22-yard touchdown connection from Bulldawg, Mike Manning to fellow Bulldawg, Trent Vest and Martin's run. Then, late in the first half, the East mounted a drive, capped by the first of Wheatley's touchdowns, a 2-yard burst that gave the East some halftime momentum and reducing the deficit to 19-7. The East then went on to score 4 unanswered touchdowns in the second half, beginning with a 51-yard catch and tackle-breaking run by the RMFL's Offensive MVP, Brock Gunter, and the final three Tyler Wheatley touchdowns, the last coming at the 6:51 mark of the fourth quarter and giving the East a comfortable 34-19 lead. The West would make it interesting, however, as with 2:03 remaining in the game, Roughrider Paul Dovel, took his turn finding his favorite receiver, hitting Chance Leeds on a 31-yard touchdown pass. A Dovel to Leeds 2-point conversion made the score 34-27. As the West was unable to capture the onsides kick or stop the East on their ensuing possession, the game ended with the East victorious.
When the final gun sounded, both teams had really enjoyed perhaps their most enjoyable game of the year and all players involved, emerged winners. Congratulations to our 2001 All-Stars!!
