MINI-CASSIA 35 BOISE 12

RUPERT - After starting the game off like "wildfire", the Boise Roughriders struggled to maintain an ember, particularly in the first half as the Mini-Cassia Bulldawgs picked up their first RMFL playoff victory since 1999 with an overwhelming 35-12 win over the visiting Roughriders.

On the second play of the Roughriders first possession, tailback Cherone Schneider broke around right end for an electrifying 66-yard touchdown romp. The Roughriders defense, lead by RMFL tackles champion, Zac Jockumsen (10-1/2 tackles, interception) and Dane Knickrehm (8.5 tackles), continued to bottle up the Bulldawg offensive attack for most of the first half. Unfortunately, the Roughrider offense struggled even more, picking up only 2 first downs the entire first half. The Bulldawg "D" came to play, even recording the first score, a safety on Roughrider quarterback Tom Bennett by defensive end Cory Haynes (4-1/2 tackles, 2 sacks) after a Craig Manning punt pinned the Roughriders deep in their own territory.

The Bulldawg defense continued to excel and after the lone solid Bulldawg drive of the first half resulted in a 6-yard Mike Manning to Alan Hakes touchdown, Hakes went to work on defense, picking off a Tom Bennett to Cherone Schneider swing pass and running it back 50-yards to paydirt to turn what would have been an 8-6 halftime lead into a 14-6 lead. Hakes also lead the team in tackles, as usual, with 6 total.

The Roughrider offense would come alive more in the second half as Roughrider quarterback, Tom Bennett, who had been sacked 4 times in the game, losing two fumbles by those sacks, found some rythem. Bennett lead a late third quarter drive, finally connecting on a 30-yard score to budding star, Anthony Miller to pull the Roughriders to within 28-12. Although the Roughriders continued to show more offensive success, eventually picking up a total of 11 first downs and over 200 total net yards on the day, they were never able to reach the end zone again. Perhaps the final indignity came as the 4th quarter clock was winding down and the Roughriders could not score with 1st and goal from the 2-yard line against a staunch Bulldawg defensive front lead by Chuck Jones, Ty Cahoon, Haynes and Dustin Lapray.

The Bulldawgs offense got another all-around star performance from Manning who completed 19 of 32 passes for 210 yards on the evening. Cory Haynes was the big Bulldawgs rushing force, rushing for 65 yards on only 14 carries and a touchdown. Haynes was a major force on both sides of the ball and would be a clear choice for playoff game MVP, had there been one.

#40 Cory Haynes rumbles through the line for another big gain, leading the Bulldawgs with 75 yards of offense.
