Falls Mustangs vs. Pocatello Silverbacks
IDAHO FALLS 32 POCATELLO 14
ARIMO - Cody Jackson completed 13
consecutive passes en route to an almost perfect game at quarterback and rushed
for 61 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Idaho Falls Mustangs to a convincing
32-14 playoff victory over the home, Pocatello Silverbacks. Jackson would
finish the day completing 17 of 19 passes with one interception and two
touchdown passes to Sean Powell to spearhead an inspired Mustang offense that
never punted on the day.
Jake Scouten also played
big for the Mustangs picking up 71 rushing and 79 receiving yards for a total
of 150 total yards by himself. The Mustangs, who averaged just over 6 yards a
carry on the ground picked up where they left off on their most recent game at
Helena where they averaged better than 9 yards a carry on the ground.

#8 Sean Powell breaks loose for an easy 18-yard touchdown catch late in
the second quarter.
Except for a last second
let down to end the first half, the Mustang defense played well througout, even
after losing reigning RMFL defensive MVP, Ron Childs early in the first half to
a minor injury. Bryce Smith stepped up at the linebacking position and recorded
8 tackles. Jason Carlyle returned to the team to record 3-1/2 tackles and Jason
Lawson returned from injury to help out as well. Although the Mustangs were
unable to sack Silverback quarterback, Jeff Belnap, the Mustang pressure forced
Belnap into a sub-par day completing only 10 of 25 passes with one
interception, by Sean Powell, who almost returned it the distance. Powell's
pick set up Jackson's second touchdown run with 0:35 remaining in the second
quarter.
Powell, who caught two
touchdown passes on offense, lead a defensive effort to "clamp down"
on Silverbacks star receiver, and reigning offensive MVP, Brock Gunter. Gunter
did catch 4 passes for 86 yards, however, that was off his pace of over 100
yards a game and he was kept out of the end zone. Stepping up, however, was
Silverbacks back-up quarterback, Brad Horsley, who showed perhaps he should
have been playing along side of Gunter all along. Horsley caught 3 passes for
85 yards and both Silverback touchdowns. Troy Sutton and Tyler Wheatley who had
burned the Mustangs for so many yards in their regular season meeting, were
held to a paltry 21 and 6 yards respectively.
The game was marked by a
relative infrequency of penalties. Although the Mustangs had a few more penalty
yards (40 to 25), they did not pick up their first penalty until there was 3:25
remaining in the third period. Both teams played well, the Mustangs simply
played better.
The Silverback defensive
effort was lead by the "usual suspects"; Jake Ball had 12-1/2 tackles
and Trent Sutton recorded 9 tackles to lead the team. But, the defense simply
had no answer for Cody Jackson on the day. Jackson and the Mustang offense
simply caught fire at the wrong time... or beit the "right time" if
you are a Mustang fan.
The result sets up the first time in team history that the Silverbacks will not be competing in the RMFL Championship. The Mustangs, the reigning RMFL Champions, continue to defend their championship and will continue their quest for an unprecedented third title next week at the Madison Lionz (8-0, 10-0).
