Falls Mustangs vs. Snake River Rebels
SNAKE RIVER 34 IDAHO FALLS 18
FORT HALL - Season after season since 1999,
Idaho Falls and Snake River have played each other at least once, sometimes
twice. Season after season, although the faces and name may change some, the
results remain the same, Snake River wins. Whether by a little or by a lot,
Snake River comes out on top. On Saturday, May 10th, 2003, the Snake River
Rebels made it a perfect 7-0 against their up-river rivals with a 34-18
victory. This time doing it perhaps more with the passing game than ever as
tight end/slot back, Travis Goodwin had the biggest day of all for the Rebels
catching 3 touchdown passes from two Rebel quarterbacks, Preston Kelley
(6-12-2-98-2) and Logan Cobb (2-5-2-36-1). The Rebel rushing game was effective
as well with Travis Boden picking up 85 yards on 11 carries and Kade Shawver
going for 51 on 8 carries. Regardless of how the Rebels did it, they got it
done, once again.
The game began with the Mustangs
having to sit starting quarterback, Cody Jackson for the first quarter to serve
out ejection time from the previous game. Mustangs star receiver, Sean Powell,
(who went on to have a great game when Jackson got back in, catching 5 passes
for 102 yards), took over and kept the Mustangs close. The first quarter ended
with the Rebels ahead 6-0 on the first Kelley to Goodwin touchdown pass, this
time of 34-yards. After a Kade Shawver touchdown midway through the second
quarter, the Mustangs got on the board when fullback, Russell Cummins (8
carries, 41 yards) broke off a 22-yard touchdown run to close the game to
within 14-6. In the closing seconds of the first half, however, Kelley found
Goodwin again, this time for a 20-yard touchdown pass to put the Rebels up
comfortably 22-6 at the half.
With the game apparently
tucked away after the third Goodwin touchdown, 28-6, the Mustangs would claw
back into it. Shortly after Goodwin's touchdown, Cody Jackson (11-25-2-116-1)
found Powell for a 64-yard catch and run to pull the Mustangs to within 28-12.
The Mustangs would pull even closer with 11 minutes remaining in the game when
Jake Scouten capped a short Mustang drive with a 3-yard run to bring the
Mustangs to within 28-18. That would be all the scoring the Mustangs would
mount, however, as the Rebels added another score later to complete the scoring
and the win.
The Rebels defense was lead by T.J. Bingham (6 tackles), Charlie Bair (5 tackles), Matt Kennedy (5 tackles, 2 sacks), Reiker Blakely (5 tackles) and Jake Phippen (5 tackles). Jeb Harrison recorded 3 tackles as well as a sack and an interception. The Mustangs got solid play from linebackers, Ron Childs (5.5 tackles) and Bryce Smith (6.5 tackles) as well as defensive end/linebacker, Donell McNeil (5 tackles, 1 sack). Additionally, Rico Chacon picked off two Snake River passes and Justin Weaver added another interception to his strong season to go along with 5 tackles. The Rebels were once again oft penalized on the game, losing another 95 yards on 14 penalties on the game.
