23, 2001 Fort Hall Cobras vs. Pocatello Silverbacks
POCATELLO 49 FORT HALL 0
Pocatello, Idaho - Jeff Belnap completed a career year, tossing 4 touchdown passes, 2 to tight end, B.J. Fillingame as the Pocatello Silverbacks completed their inaugural season with a 49-0 thrashing of local rival, Fort Hall Cobras. Geographically, Fort Hall and Pocatello are only a few miles apart, however, the football teams were a lot further apart last Saturday. Belnap set a new RMFL record for touchdown passes in a season with 21, eclipsing Roughrider Paul Dovel's 18, set last week against Fort Hall. Dovel had barely passed Boise's Dustin Vandermeer who recorded 17 touchdown passes in 2000. Tyler Wheatley showed why he is the number one ground gainer for the season in the RMFL, breaking the first touchdown on a 46-yard run early in the 1st quarter. Wheatley finishes the season with over 500 yards rushing and wins the RMFL rushing title in 2001 for a shortened 8-game season. Jared Anderson also played well chipping in a touchdown and a two-point conversion and perenial all-star receiver, Brock Gunter had another big game with 5 catches for 80 yards. Gunter (and Anderson) had played with the Cobra franchise all of their previous seasons, so it was bittersweet for them to contribute to the defeat. The Cobra defense, was however, able to keep Gunter out of the end zone, preventing Gunter from catching Boise wide out, Chance Leeds for the touchdown and scoring titles for 2001. Gunter finishes with 10 touchdowns, two behind Leeds' 12. The Silverback defense was lead by Al Covington (6 tackles) who started the second quarter off with a spectacular interception return for a touchdown, and Spencer Perry (3 tackles, 1-1/2 sacks). The Silverbacks now get a week off before facing the winner of the Boise/Mini-Cassia game for the 2001 RMFL Championship.
