May 31st, 2003 Mini-Cassia Bulldawgs vs. Boise Roughriders
MINI-CASSIA 23 BOISE 7
NAMPA - It was a game of firsts.
For the first time in RMFL history, someone recorded more than 100 tackles in a season as Boise's Zac Jockumsen went over 100 with 105-1/2 officially in 2003. For the first time in RMFL history, a player recorded more than 12 sacks in a season, as Roughriders defensive lineman, Curt Haldeman picked up 13-1/2 in 2003 AND for the first time ever, the Mini-Cassia Bulldawgs defeated the Boise Roughriders, 23-7 to win the South Division championship and get the #3 seed in the upcoming RMFL playoffs.
It was bitter-sweet for the Bulldawgs as head coach Dennis Hakes' mother passed away, she is also players' Alan, Dallas and Ben Hakes' grandmother. The Hakes' were missing from the game, however, their inspiration lived on as the team dedicated the game to Mrs. Hakes and the team responded accordingly. Playing inspired football from the opening kickoff, the Bulldawgs racked up over 300 total net yards against the vaunted Roughrider defense, overcoming 105 yards of penalties and 6 Roughrider sacks (all compliments of Roughriders' Curt Haldeman).
Lonnie Edwards had another 100+ total yard day (81 rushing, 25 receiving) and Mike Manning passed for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Bulldawgs fullback, Cory Haynes was also impressive rushing for 49 yards on offense and recording the only Bulldawg sack on defense. Haynes was also involved in tackling Roughriders' Cherone Schneider in the Boise end zone for an early Bulldawg safety. In the absence of defensive captain and tackles leader, Alan Hakes, the Bulldawg defense was lead by Casey Neilsen (5.5 tackles, interception), Dee Jay Stanger (5 tackles) and Rick May (4.5 tackles).
Besides the big defensive games from Jockumsen and Haldeman, an active Dan Buhler also recorded 6 tackles for the Roughriders. The Boise offense sputtered early and often as back-up quarterback, Rock Crothers was pressed in to service as starter, Tom Bennett's shoulder healed from an injury sustained in the Snake River Rebel game on May 17th. Boise tailback, Cherone Schneider, however, was real light, leading the team in both rushing yards (114 yards, touchdown) and receiving yards (3 receptions, 33 yards).
One could not help get the feeling, however, that this game was a simple tune-up of things to come as, now with a Mini-Cassia win, the two teams get to "tee it up again" next Saturday at Minico High School. This time, however, the losers season is over. Had the Roughriders won, they would have had to go to Idaho Falls to play the opening play-off game against the Mustangs; Mini-Cassia would have had to travel to Pocatello.
