Game Summary/Box Score
May 3, 2008 Logan Stampede at Uintah Basin Oilers @ Duchesne High School

LOGAN 14 UINTAH BASIN 8

By Jeremy Conetah

DUCHESNE  - It was a beautiful day for football, no wind gusts of 50 mph plus and no clouds.  However, judging from the first 4 minutes of the game, one would have thought that this game was being played in a torrential downpour.  The Oilers kicked off first and forced and recovered a fumble to get possession of the football from the Stampede.  But on their first play from scrimmage after busting through the line for a decent gain, Oilers HB Luke McCurdy would cough up the ball and the Stampede would regain possession again.  Unfortunately, they would lose it on another fumble only plays later.  Uintah Basin looked primed to capitalize on the good fortune but after a few running plays, a botched center to quarterback exchange would result in another turnover.  So in the beginning both teams would combine for 4 offensive series-with 4 fumbles lost.  This was just a sign of the defensive battle to come.

After a scoreless first quarter the Oilers struck first on a 41 yard strike from QB Jeremy Conetah to HB Jared Lujan for the opening score.  The ensuing conversion attempt was good as Conetah found WR Terry Shaw in the corner of the endzone to take the lead 8-0.  But later on in the quarter after some excellent third down conversions and a great over the defender catch by the Stampede, Logan found paydirt on a ten yard strike on third down as WR Brian Phillips caught the pass from QB Brandon Carlisle an a little flare route that worked.  Phillips would again catch the ball on a two point conversion to knot up the score 8-8 and so the score would remain till halftime.

A tremendous defensive battle would ensue and neither team's offenses could find the endzone.  Logan had the first chance late in the fourth quarter to put the game away when a bad long snap on a punt attempt forced the Oilers punter to just fall on it, giving the Stampede the ball on the Oilers 19 yard line.  But after a defensive stand by the Oilers and a failed fourth down conversion by the stampede the Oilers would get the ball back with four minutes left.  The biggest gain by either team happened when on a errant long snap Oiler QB Conetah escaped a tackle and found WR Travis Maxfield for a 53 yard gain.  The Oilers would then march the ball inside the 15 but could not punch in on 13 attempts as twice the Oilers were given new sets of downs on a Roughing the Passer and Pass Interference penalties.  The Stampede defense rose to the occasion and shut the running backs down but had a little help with Oiler receivers dropping three passes in the endzone. One coming with only 14.7 seconds left in regulation.  A botch snap on a field goal attempt ended the Oilers hope of finishing off the game.

In overtime, Stampede would hold the Oilers to four and out and then would march down the field to score on a two yard run from Carlisle to end what was an exciting and quite possibly one of the most unexpected and exciting games of the year as the Stampede routed the Oilers 34-8 two weeks earlier up in Logan.  Next the Oilers will Travel to Salt Lake City to take on the Strippling Warriorz, while the Logan Stampede will play host to the Morgan Mauraders.
