By Mark Jones SUGAR CITY - What a difference playing at home can make.
The Eastern Idaho Lionz put together arguably their best performance
of
the 2008 season on Saturday in a 40-0 win over the Great Falls
Gladiators at Sugar-Salem High School.
“It went a lot better,” said Eastern Idaho coach Jason Stucki.
And when a team piles up more than 400 yards of total offense,
things
tend to go well, especially when it is the team’s first home game of
the season.
“I thought they looked better,” Stucki said of his team.
“We’re getting
there in execution. There is still a few plays to work on in
practice.”
The Lionz put the game away with a 21-point second period.
Kory Fleming opened the scoring for Eastern Idaho midway through the
opening period on a 10-yard scoring run.
In the second, Fleming added his second touchdown of the game, this
one
came from 4 yards out.
Later in the period, Jay Hanley hauled in a 21-yard scoring pass
from
Jon Lammers to give the Lionz a 21-0 lead.
In the late stages of the second period, Rhett Briggs caught an
11-yard
touchdown pass from Lammers.
Lammers and Robert Dilgard added 1-yard scoring runs in the second
half
to round out the scoring for Eastern Idaho.
For the game, Lammers completed 9 of 20 passes for 199 yards and two
touchdowns.
Fleming finished with 83 yards rushing on nine carries.
Defensively, Cory Newton led the surge with 4.5 tackles. Payden
Toone
had two interceptions, while Tyson Bergeson recorded two quarterback
sacks.
Eastern Idaho (3-1) will return to action Saturday at home against
Helena.
“It’s going to be a big game,” Stucki said. “They’re going
to be
confident coming in here, thinking they can lay the wood.”
