2008 ALL-STARS ANNOUNCED!!!!!!!!

RMFL COMES TOGETHER AS AA/AAA, NORTH AND SOUTH GET MIXED TOGETHER!!!

RMFL – The 11th annual RMFL All-Star Classic will kick-off on Saturday, July 12th at approximately 6:15 p.m… and this year’s all-star game will have… another new twist.

In 2007, the league experimented with a AA vs. AAA matchup… which was reasonably successful.  However, this season with Bitterroot, Missoula, Davis and Bear River, the 4 best AA teams from 2007 moving up to AAA, it was felt that the AA vs. AAA format would be significantly one-sided.

So… the RMFL Managing Board voted to “socialize” the game.  The AA will be mixed with the AAA and Northern teams will play with southern teams.  Something that has never happened before in the RMFL.

“I think it really provides a great opportunity,” RMFL Commissioner, Jared Neumeier observed, “for Montana players to get to know Utah players and guys on perennial AAA teams like Idaho Falls and Cache Valley to play along side players from Glacier and Helena.  The RMFL is truly coming together for this one.”

The teams were semi-randomly divided after the completion of the season into a home and away squad.  The squads would be comprised of various RMFL teams based on a random formula that assigned the home team the #1 AA team, #2 AAA team, #3 AA team, #4 AAA team and so on.  The visiting team would be comprised similarly, beginning with the #1 AAA team, then the #2 AA team, etc.

The random mix of teams is expected to take the edge of regional rivalries and/or the AAA vs. AA pressure and allow players to just come and play and get to know and play with other star players from around the league that they would not get to otherwise.

Players are selected to the all-star team primarily by their own GM/coaches who submit a ranked list of both their offensive and defensive players. Based on their respective finish in the standings, the RMFL begins to fill the All-star roster using the teams’ ranked lists with teams that finish higher… getting more all-stars.  Although the league attempts to get teams top most ranked players on the team, oftentimes, positional gluts require some slightly lower ranked players to make the team in positions where the competition was not as severe.

“Linebacker is the classic example,” Neumeier explained, “every defensive submission had a linebacker or several linebackers at or near the top of their list.  Well, with 11 or 12 teams chipping in players, there is just not enough linebacker slots… or even alternate recognition spots to go around.  Many teams had a #2 or #3 ranked player for their defense that will not even be listed.  Fine linebackers will just be left off the team because their team had other linebackers ahead of them… or their team just did not do well enough to get them on.”

The other thing that Neumeier noted is that players shouldn’t get “too caught up with the specific position they are named to”.  A player that may have played most of the season at offensive guard, may be listed as a tackle and vice versa.  A safety may be listed at cornerback.  “Most of the time,” Neumeier explained, “its inadvertent. However, some of the time, we were trying to get a guy that’s deserving onto the team, so we just moved him into a similar position. We are trying to capture the best players of the year.. with the best teams getting the most players.  It’s not a perfect system, but its still a lot better than what we got when we had a voting process.  There will be deserving players left off.  The only answer is to improve your team.  The top teams pretty much got all of their top ranked guys in.”

According to Neumeier, however, aside from the position of linebacker, most positions were filled in accordance with rankings and players who earned the spot did seem to make the team or the alternate list.

Every team received a minimum of 2 players on the first team.

First team all-star selected players (not alternates) are expected to confirm with their team GM or Coach by the end of the week that they will be in attendance at the game.  The game will be held in Northern Utah or Southeastern Idaho on July 12th with a kickoff around 6:15 p.m.  Players will be required to report to the field for practice and to learn the coaches plays and calls no later than 3 p.m.

Coaches for the all-star game have been selected from the #1 and #2 teams of each division.  The Utah Shock, the AAA #1 seed have been asked to coach the offense of the away team, while the Boise Speed have been asked to coach the defense.  For the home team, the Eastern Idaho Lionz have been asked to coach the defense, while the Utah Wolverines coaching staff has been asked to coach the offense.

There will be the annual RMFL Skills competition beginning at 5:00 p.m.

The RMFL will hand out its annual award hardware during an extended halftime show for both the AAA and AA divisions of the RMFL.

NOTE: FIRST TEAM NAMES LISTED IN RANDOM ORDER. NOT NECESSARILY STARTING ORDER.  PLAYER MUST SHOW UP ON TIME TO PRE-GAME PREPARATIONS FOR STARTING CONSIDERATIONS.
