July 12, 2008 11th Annual RMFL All Star Classic @ Marsh Valley
High School

RMFL HOME STARS 12
MARSH VALLEY – Utah Wolverine star wide receiver, Joe Mapson, proved to
be too much for Home All-Star defensive backs to handle, as he collected 6
Jordan Peterson passed for 145 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the “white
jersey” squad to a 41-12 All-Star Classic victory; collecting the game MVP on
the way.
In a relatively penalty-free game, the Visiting All-Stars proved to have
too much offensive fire-power behind Mapson, the passing of Jordan Peterson
(14-28-248-3) and the contributions of 8 different running backs, including
newly crowned AA MVP, Anthony Pomerlee, who rushed
for 32 yards on 5 carries and an offensive rushing score.

In the first half, the breaks simply went the way of the Visitors,
particularly as Mapson picked up the games first score with 38 seconds to go in
the first quarter, when he turned a 5-yard hitch play into an electrifying
50-yard touchdown pass play, giving the Visitors the 7-0 lead. Mapson would get
the next score, culminating the squad’s next drive on a 20-yard fade route,
out-leaping (possibly pushing off), Idaho Falls’ Kody
Spencer for a 14-0 Visitors lead. The
usually reliable place kicker, Golden Whetman,
working with a different snapper and holder, missed 3 field goals in the first
half, keeping the home stars close at 14-0 at the intermission.
The Home squad kept the game close even through the 3rd
quarter when the Visitors added only one more score on a Brandon Carlisle
18-yard burst through the heart of the Home squads defense to put the Visitors
ahead 21-0 going into the 4th.
The collective wheels, however, came off for the Home team early and
often in the 4th quarter.
On the second play of the 4th quarter, Snake River’s Travis Barfuss, got to the home squad quarterback, Adam Cunningham
in his own end zone, also knocking the ball lose.
Shortly after that touchdown, Anthony Pomerlee
would cap another Visitor drive with a 20-yard explosion around the right end
and into the end zone as the Visitors pushed their lead out to 35-0. And with
3:24 to go in the game, Mapson caught his 3rd touchdown pass, an
incredible diving catch in the corner of the end zone and the Visitors lead
41-0 after a blocked extra point.

Joe Mapson (laying on end zone pylon) had just
made a diving touchdown catch behind
Then, the game really got exciting.
The home team’s star defensive back, Nate Cone,
would be involved in two exciting scoring plays to account for the final two
touchdowns, both by the home squad.
No doubt after excessive imploring, Cone was inserted into the Home team
backfield as a running back for a play.
On the play, Cone took a pitch from quarterback Adam Cunningham, stopped
and fired a 60-yard touchdown strike to Boise’s Britt Hall to get the Home
squad on the board with 2:05 to go in the game.
On the Visitor’s next series, a backfield mix up between Peterson and
Roger Shulze resulted in a lose ball.
Ultimately, Nate Cone would end up with the
ball, however, as he was being tackled, flipped the ball to oncoming teammate,
Harold Ragin. Ragin, who had early won the “Fastest Man” race over,
ironically, Britt Hall, was “off to the races”, taking toss 63-yards for
another Home score.
The Visitors had pitched a shutout to that point with solid defense lead
by Josh Slater of the Davis Vipers who lead all with 6 total tackles on the
day. The Visiting squad would force 4
turnovers from the home, including the touchdown fumble recovery by Curtis and
interceptions by each Doug Brannon (
