Game Summary/Box Score
May 5, 2007 Pocatello Predators vs. Eastern Idaho Lionz @ Sugar-Salem
High School
EASTERN IDAHO 20 POCATELLO 7
SUGAR CITY – Todd Barber threw for 179 yards
and two touchdowns, including the go-ahead score to the teams top receiver, Zac
Johnson, in the second quarter, as the Eastern Idaho Lionz remained one of only
two un-defeated teams in the AAA of the RMFL with a difficult 20-7 victory over
the hard-luck Pocatello Predators.
After the Lionz scored
first before a partisan home crowd, on the first Barber touchdown toss, a
5-yard score to rising star, Ammon Kaonohi, Predators all-around star, Troy
Sutton dove in and blocked the extra point attempt, keeping the Lionz lead at
only 6-0.
That point would seem very
important, at first, after Predator quarterback, Jordan Peterson, found
ex-Lion, Brandon Peebler, for a 15-yard touchdown late in the first period,
giving the Predators the precarious 7-6 lead. That lead would hold up for most
of the second quarter, until Barber and Johnson hooked up with 4:50 remaining
on the halftime clock.
Despite the touchdown,
Johnson would be held to his lowest offensive output of the season, with only 3
receptions for 28 yards by a surging Pocatello defense that recorded 6
quarterback sacks, 3 by Davien Brokaw, on the athletic and elusive Barber. Putting
the effort into perspective, the much maligned Pocatello defensive front, only
recorded 9 total sacks in the entire 2006 season.
The Lionz rushing game,
however, was solid as well, with Aros Mackey leading the way with 56 yards on 7
carries, including a game-icing 25-yard touchdown scamper early in the 4th
period that increased a tentative 12-7 Eastern Idaho lead to a 2-plus score
margin of 20-7.
The Lionz defense held the
Pocatello passing game in check, allowing only 38 net passing yards in the
game, however, behind quarterback, Peterson and another outstanding effort by
Troy Sutton. Peterson lead all Predator rushers with 59 yards on 10 carries
(5.9 average) and Sutton, who has had big games rushing against the Lionz
before, rushed for 55 yards on 6 carries (8.1 average). However, three key
turnovers, (including a squibbed kick-off from the Lionz they failed to recover),
an ineffective passing game and 115 yards of penalties, ultimately contributed the
Predators’ undoing in the contest.
Leading another solid Lionz
defensive effort that held the Predators to less than 200 total net yards of
offense, was Josh Huntsman and Josh Pettit, who recorded 4-1/2 tackles each and
a number of key defensive plays to help force the Predator mistakes and save a
most difficult win for the home town Lionz.
