Game Summary/Box Score
May 5, 2007 Idaho Matadors vs. Magic Valley Bulldawgs @ Jerome High School

IDAHO 16 MAGIC VALLEY 9

JEROME – Perhaps the most significant game in franchise history for both the Idaho Matadors and Magic Valley Bulldawgs was played on June 11, 2005.  On that day, the Matadors defeated the Bulldawgs 26-6, and neither franchise has been the same since.  On May 5th, 2007, the Matadors did it again to the Bulldawgs, this time at the home of the Bulldawgs, fighting back from behind most of the game, the Matadors won on a 79-yard pass play from Tom Bennett to Javon Lincoln to squeak out another big 16-9 victory over the Magic Valley Bulldawgs.

On the earlier fateful afternoon in 2005, the Bulldawgs entered the game with a 4-3 record, a victory securing them a home game in the first round of the 2005 RMFL playoffs. The Matadors were reeling from a 2-5 start in their inaugural season and had nothing to play for… except pride. When the Matadors beat the Bulldawgs, it sent a chain reaction of events that neither franchise has fully recovered from.  Right after that game, the Bulldawgs, now having a road playoff game in Missoula, Montana, would… due to lack of player commitment… drop out of the playoffs and soil what had been a great reputation as a proud franchise for many years previous.  The Matadors, on the other hand, apparently buoyed by their big win, argued to become a AAA team in 2006, and were not able to maintain their competitive play at that level for a full season…eventually forfeiting their last game of ’06. Had the Bulldawgs won, as expected, in ’05… it leaves one to wonder where the two franchises would be today.

On Saturday, once again, the Bulldawgs came into this home game with a lot of hope, nursing a 2-1 record to the Matadors 1-2 record, the Bulldawgs were thinking about a potential home playoff seed… enter, once again, the Matadors.

Tom Bennett passed for 181 yards and Anthony Pomerlee rushed for 103 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown in the 3rd quarter to pace an Idaho offense that had been stymied for much of the game.  Pomerlees biggest gains throughout the first half and most of the second half were nullified by penalties and/or big 3rd and 4th down stops by an underrated Bulldawg defense.  It was the Bulldawgs defense, specifically, one-man-wrecking-crew, Jason Blair that scored the first points of the game.  Blair got into the Idaho backfield, getting quarterback Bennett and forcing a fumble by Bennett in the Matador end zone. Blair would fall on the ball as well, giving the Bulldawgs the early 6-0 lead.  Carl Ott would add an extremely rare Bulldawg field goal in the 2nd, a 44-yard kick that would give the Bulldawgs a 9-0 halftime advantage. The field goal was only the 3rd field goal in Bulldawgs history (10 seasons).

The Bulldawgs offense has continued to get solid play from returning veteran, and the league’s 2001 MVP, Lonnie Edwards, who rushed for 48 yards on only 8 carries to help pace the Magic Valley offense which did gain a respectable 205 total net yards.

In the end, however, it was their inability to punch any scores in the second half and the big homerun ball from Bennett to Lincoln that undid the Bulldawgs creating a two-way tie in the middle of the conference between the Bulldawgs and Matadors at 2-2. The Matadors other score, to knot the game up at 9-9, came just before the big Lincoln pass play.  A swarm of Matador rushers had dropped Bulldawg quarterback, Ben Landrian, in the end zone.  It was immediately after the Matadors took possession after the safety free kick, that Bennett found Lincoln for the go ahead play.

Nick Ramsey would lead the Matadors defense with 9 tackles including ½ a sack (the safety) and Kyle Gambrel would lead the Bulldawgs defense with 10-1/2 tackles in what turned out to be the toughest game of the day
