SOUTH CACHE After a tightly fought first quarter
resulting in a Bear River Valley 7-0 lead, the Rockets exploded for another 21
unanswered points in the second period to jump out to a 28-0 halftime lead and
a 57-8 final over a spirited Morgan Marauder football team glad to be playing
near home again after a 3-game road swing in Idaho.
Dave Williams 99 yards on
only 6 carries, 3 of which were for touchdowns in a highly productive game for
the Rockets. Mike Messinger, Cade Lee and Marvin Mays all chipped in a touchdown each on
the ground as the Rockets rolled out 225 rushing yards against the Morgan
defense that came into the game ranked a respectable 8th after
playing on the road early.
Rocket quarterback, Mike
Jenkins, would have a non-essential day, overall, with the rushing game
performing so well, only attempted 11 passes, with 5 completions, 2 of them for
touchdowns.
The Marauders would make a
game of it in the third quarter, holding the Rocket offense in check and
getting a touchdown by Tyson Katoa (4 carries, 37
yards) to pull to within 28-8 until early in the 4th quarter. The Marauders, however, could not continue
their momentum and were eventually overwhelmed by a deep Rocket squad, which
rolled up another 29 points in the final period, including a sack in the end
zone for a safety by Dave Curtis.
The Bear River Valley defense was lead by John Walker who recorded 5-1/2 tackles, including a sack. In all, the Rockets would get 5 quarterback sacks and two turnovers (fumbles) in holding down the Marauders at home setting up a re-match for the potential #1 seed with the Vipers on May 12th.
