School
CACHE VALLEY 32 UTAH WOLVERINES 20
SALT LAKE CITY – The “Game of the Week” turned out
to be the most penalty-ridden game in RMFL history as the Cache Valley Bears
overcame 205 penalty yards and 22 penalties, using a dominating defense and
long sustained drives to defeat the Utah Wolverines 32-20 for the Wolverines
first loss of the season.
The Wolverines were hit
with 120 penalty yards on 11 penalties themselves for a combined game total of
33 assessed penalties for 325 yards, all RMFL tops.
However, in the middle of
the yellow flag day at Juan Diego High School some football did get played.
The Bears overcame an early
6-0 deficit when Wolverines star tailback, John Jensen, broke an 81-yard run
through the Bears defense with 8:05 left on the first quarter clock. The run would end up accounting for almost ½
of the Wolverines total net yards on the day as the Bears defense shored up for
most of the rest of the game.
Cache Valley quarterback,
Ryan Harris passed for 253 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead a bear offense that
controlled the clock for more than 40 of the 60 minutes during the game. The Bears had 74 offensive plays to the
Wolverines’ 37 as the Bear offense had its best game of the season against a
Wolverine defense that had been shutting down opponents in its previous 3
victories to open up the season. The
Bears utilized three running backs, Pete Shields, Fine Unga and Nate Jackson,
who rushed for 74 yards to lead the Bear rushers, including the first… and only
rushing touchdown of the day late in the first quarter to give the Bears a 7-6
lead. A lead they would never
relinquish.
After Jackson’s touchdown,
the Bear offense really got going as Harris found Billy Kate early in the 2nd
quarter and Pete Shields later in the 2nd quarter to take a 19-6
lead on the Wolverines. However, on the
ensuing kickoff after the Shields score, John Jensen struck again. Jensen dashed his way through the Bears
special team containment en route to a 90-yard touchdown return to pull the
Wolverines to within 19-13 with 2:05 in the half. On the ensuing drive,
however, Harris worked the 2-minute clock to perfection, ending in a short
touchdown pass to Blake Garrett as the halftime clock was about to expire to
give the Bears a more comfortable 25-13 halftime lead.
After another big kick-off
return to start the second half, this time by Joe Mapson, the Wolverines struck
again, Mapson being the beneficiary of the good field position he set up with a
22-yard touchdown catch from back up quarterback, Hans Hatchett. It would be the only completion for Hatchett
on the evening, replacing starting quarterback, Dean Fountaine, who had been
leading the RMFL in passing coming into the contest. Fountaine went down in the
second quarter on what a number of observers described as an “unnecessary
questionable knee shot” by Amos Fiefia that is expected to be reviewed this
week by the RMFL.
The score remained 25-20
for the longest time as the Wolverines defense came up big when it had to and
kept a sputtering offense in the game.
But the Bears “D” was the
story, getting 5 sacks, 4 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries to off-set numerous
penalties that hurt both teams, however, the Bears in particular.
Of note, for the Bears,
Billy Cate, had a career day with 5 receptions for 105 yards to lead all
receivers. Blake Garrett caught two more big touchdown passes. It was Garrett,
that two weeks earlier caught the big touchdown pass against the Rhino-Raiders
that almost lead to a big Bears victory at home, except for a conversion
block that held the Bears short on a 7-6 score.
Defensively, the Bears got two sacks from Amos Fiefia and 1-1/2 from Vaea Fiefia, as well as 6 tackles from both Matt Wiser and Dan Sundstrom (who also had an interception) to lead a Bears defense that was ranked 1st in the RMFL in 2006. Matt Shoda had a big evening for the Wolverine defense with 10-1/2 tackles, including an interception and linebacker mate, Roger Shulze had 6 tackles and an interception as the Wolverine defense had 3 interceptions and a fumble recovery to help keep the Bears offense at bay.
