MISSOULA – The Missoula Phoenix kept their
perfect, non-Bitterroot record in tact, with a very difficult 21-7 victory over
the Great Falls Gladiators at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
The Gladiators played
perhaps their best game of the season, overcoming an early 7-0 hole after a
Dave Garza from Shane Jurasek touchdown toss early in the game, when Mike Pease
forced his way in from 2-yards out later in the 2nd quarter. The half finished with a 7-7 deadlocked game.
It was not until the 2nd
of 3 Shane Jurasek touchdown passes, this time to Tyler Boaz with just under 5
minutes remaining in the game that the deadlock was broken. Jurasek would pass
for 174 yards on the day against no interceptions against an excellent and
spirited Great Falls defense that finally had some good support from the Gladiator
offense.
It was not until later in
the 4th quarter when Jurasek found Dave Garza for the second time in
the game, and their 10th touchdown combination of the season, that
the Phoenix seemed to have pulled away for good.
Otherwise, the game was
marred by critical penalties and turnovers as each team struggled to get
continuity in their respective offenses… mostly caused by great defensive play
from both sides.
The Phoenix were hit with
98 penalty yards and lost 3 fumbles… off-setting some the 252 total net yards
gained by the Jurasek and the Missoula offense.
The Gladiators finally got
a break-out day from Yahreen Collins, who rushed for 83
yards on a yeoman 23 carries during the game as the Gladiators only attempted 8
passes against 52 rushing attempts; by far the most predominantly rushing team
in the RMFL.
Nick True, Bud Maynard and
Kevin Bereta lead the Phoenix defense in keeping the
Gladiators away from the end zone enough to hold on for the victory. True recorded 8 tackles and Maynard and Bereta each chipped in with 7 a piece as the Phoenix
struggled at times with the Gladiator ground game which amassed 184 yards on
the 54 carries.
Steve Brown lead the Gladiator defense with 5 tackles and Mike Pease had two sacks as the Gladiators fell short once again and find themselves in “must win” territory heading into the final weeks of the season.
