HELENA – Shane Jurasek threw for 3
touchdown passes against his old team and the Missoula Phoenix turned what used
to be a tense, bitter, rivalry into a comfortable 29-0 victory over the Helena
Titans in Helena, Montana.
After Phoenix star running
back, Gavin Johnson broke loose on a 20-yard touchdown scamper early in the
game, most of the rest of the Phoenix offense came through the air and Jurasek’s
right arm. He would go on to complete
14 of 23 for 188 as the Titans defense played fairly well, holding the Phoenix
high-octane offense to only 245 total net yards, including 4 quarterback sacks.
The Missoula defense,
however, was even more on top of their game, holding the Titans to 181 total
net yards and getting 6 turnovers (4 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries) while
their offense did not have any turnovers… a very significant difference in an
otherwise tightly contested game in the capital city of Montana.
Gavin Johnson would go on
to catch a Jurasek touchdown toss to go with his rushing score and lead all
players with 83 total net yards, 59 rushing and 24 receiving.
Helena’s Derek Burch,
however, would have a very solid day rushing out of the Titan backfield;
gaining 72 yards on 13 carries for an excellent 5-1/2 yard per carry average as
the Titan offense did have some success, however, were simply unable to
overcome some solid defensive stops… and a half a dozen turnovers.
Bud Maynard, Stephen
Schreibeis, James Decoutau and Jeff Hecht lead the Phoenix defense with 4
tackles each as Missoula remained undefeated heading into their big showdown
with fellow unbeaten northern conference foe, Bitterroot on May 19th.
As usual, Tiff Meyers and
Spencer Steiner lead the Titan defense with 8 tackles each, however, the Titans
were just unable to contain the Jurasek-lead passing game enough to challenge for
victory.
