Game Summary/Box Score
April 28, 2007 Idaho Falls Mustangs at Pocatello Predators @ Highland
High School
IDAHO FALLS 40 POCATELLO 15
POCATELLO – After a heart-breaking loss to
the Utah Heat and an season opening humbling loss to the Utah Wolverines, the
Idaho Falls Mustangs recorded their first victory of the season, a convincing
40-15 drubbing of arch-rival, Pocatello Predators, Saturday afternoon at
Highland High School.
With the exception of a
47-7 Idaho Falls win over depleted Pocatello team in the 2005 playoffs, every
Idaho Falls/Pocatello game in the past 5 years has been tight, down to the wire
events… until this one.
The Idaho Falls Mustangs
defense picked off Predator quarterback, Jordan Peterson, 6 times and recorded
two sacks en route to shutting down the Pocatello offense until there was less
than 4 minutes to go in the game when Peterson found Kelly Nebeker for the
first offensive score for Pocatello… but not until the Mustangs held a 33-7
lead.
Mustang quarterback,
Donavan Ard passed for more than 200 yards and 3 touchdowns, including 140
yards worth to favorite target, Brandon Reed, to lead the Mustangs offense.
Reed, playing defense,
starting the Mustangs early, when he recorded the first interception of
Peterson, the first of his two, on the Predators first drive. Reed would step in front of the errant ball
and take it 22-yards to the house, giving the Mustangs the quick 7-0 lead. Later in the first quarter, Ard would find
former Roughrider and former Lionz player, Aaron Blakely for a score, increasing
the Mustang lead to 13-0 after one.
Reigning rushing champion,
Travis Boden, having his best offensive day of the young season, rushing for 81
yards on 17 carries, scored on a 14-yard burst earlier in the second quarter
accounting for a 19-0 halftime lead for the Mustangs as the defense did its
part against a struggling Pocatello offense.
Continuing to raise
eyebrows in the AAA division, newly added Mustang, Dylan Cooper, came up big
once again. Cooper lead both teams with
9 tackles, including one of the 6 interceptions for the Mustangs and scored his
second two-point conversion for the Mustangs special teams. Reed, of course, had the two interceptions
and a score and Jeb Harrison and Austin Shawver, also chipped in 4 tackles a
piece, with Harrison also getting one of the errant Peterson tosses.
Although there were few
bright spots for the Predators on this day, the offense did manage 209 total
net yards, including 55 yards and the lone offensive touchdown by perhaps their
greatest offensive threat, Kelly Nebeker.
Brandon Peebler caught 4 passes as well as the Pocatello rushing game
was held in check with only 77 yards on 20 carries as a unit.
