MISSOULA – After battling with a gamey bunch
of valiant Glacier Knights to a scoreless first quarter, the Missoula Phoenix
erupted for 29 second quarter points, including two touchdown runs by Gavin
Johnson and two touchdown receptions by Dave Garza to pull away and bury the
Knights at home at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
Although scoring 3 total
touchdowns on the day, Johnson would only go on to gain 59 total rushing yards
against a pretty good Glacier defense.
Garza, however, had even more success, finishing with 3 touchdowns
receptions for 147 total yards, his best day, so far, as a member of the
Missoula Phoenix.
Shane Jurasek had another
solid day behind center, passing for 203 yards, 3 touchdowns… without an
interception before coming out of the game with the big lead.
The Missoula defense held
the Knights to only 60 total net yards, forcing 3 fumbles and keeping the
Knight offense at bay throughout. Fred
Russo and Kurtis Learned lead the Phoenix defense
with 5 tackles in the game, which saw the home town, and undefeated Phoenix
able to unload their sizeable bench early in the second half.
Tony Rojo lead a spirited Glacier defense with 8 tackles and, as always, Jason Zielanski was everywhere, recording 6 tackles on defense, leading the Glacier rushers with 39 yards rushing and catching 5 of the 9 completed passes by Knight signal caller, Ryan Bennett.
