Game Summary/Box Score
April 21, 2007 Missoula Phoenix at Great Falls Gladiators

MISSOULA  28 GREAT FALLS 7

GREAT FALLS – What was billed as the AA “Game of the Week” turned out to be the “disappointment of the week” for the host Great Falls Gladiators as the Gladiators fell to the Missoula Phoenix for the 5th consecutive time, this time by a 28-7 margin.  The Phoenix defense rose to the occasion, forcing 7 Gladiator turnovers (3 fumbles, 4 interceptions) to spoil the Gladiators home celebration.

The Phoenix jumped out quickly when Phoenix quarterback, Shane Jurasek hooked up with Nick Lumpkin for a 60-yard bomb on the teams’ second play from scrimmage.  After spending the rest of the 1st quarter exchanging defensive shots and turnovers, the Phoenix pushed the lead to 14-0 when Jurasek found his favorite receiver, going back to their days in Helena together, Dave Garza, for a 7-yard score. Jurasek would pass for 135 yards and the two scores against the vaunted Gladiator defense, a defense that performed very well, only yielding 133 total net yards on the day, however wrere just not able to keep the visitors out of the end zone when set up in good field position after any of the many offensive turnovers by the Gladiators.

In fact, taking away the 60-yard Lumpkin pass, the Gladiators would hold the Phoenix to only 73 net yards of offense on 41 offensive plays.

The Gladiators, however, were hounded by their own mistakes with not only giving the ball away 7 times, but shooting themselves in the foot to the tune of 10 penalties for 104 yards lost.

Coming up big for the Phoenix defense was Stephen Schreibeis, who recorded 8-1/2 tackles and one of the interceptions, Bud Maynard (7 tackles, 1 sack), James Jacobson (6 tackles, 1 sack) and Brian Hughes accounted for 2 of the picks off Gladiator quarterback, Brad Thurber, who had his worst outing as a quarterback, completing only 8 of 21 with the 4 picks.

The Gladiator defense, once again, was very tough, limiting the high powered Phoenix offense to numerous “3 and outs”, however, were not able to continually keep the Phoenix out of the end zone when set up off an offensive turnover.  Mike Pease lead the defense with 7 tackles and Mike Rhode, the AA sack leader from 2006, recorded 2 more in a losing cause.
