UTAH HEAT 33 IDAHO FALLS 29

TOOELE – In one of the most incredible comeback games of the season, the Utah Heat recovered from losing a 13-6 halftime lead; falling behind after 22 unanswered Idaho Falls Mustangs points 29-13; to score 20 straight 4th quarter points, including the game winner, a 9-yard Jeff Wissler to Jeff Johnson touchdown with 1:09 remaining in the game to upset the Mustangs at home Saturday night 33-29.

In the ultimate of roller-coaster games, the Heat drew first blood in the first quarter on Jeff Johnson’s (8 receptions, 134 yards, 2 touchdowns) first touchdown reception of the day late in the first quarter. After the Mustangs tied the score early in the second quarter, the Heat took the halftime lead on the first of two Dannon Handcuff (14 carries, 75 yards, 2 touchdowns) to take the 13-7 advantage at the break.

That’s when the fireworks started to go off.

After Mustang quarterback, Donavan Ard (16-32-231-1-2) found his favorite target, Brandon Reed for a 24-yard score early in the second to give the visitors the 14-13 edge.  The other Mustang wide receiver, Scott Brown, playing defense, picked off Wissler and raced 31 yards to pay dirt to put the Mustangs ahead 21-13. On the Mustangs’ next trip down the field, an attempted Mustang field goal was blocked by Junior Salt and after some scrambling for the loose football, Mustangs’ star linebacker, Jeb Harrison ended up with the football in the Heat end zone and after a two-point conversion gave the Mustangs what looked to be an insurmountable 29-13 lead.

In the 4th quarter, Heat quarterback, Jeff Wissler, who finished the game with 332 yards passing and 3 touchdowns REALLY went to work.  Wissler found the other of a great receiving tandem, Brian Simmons for an early 4th quarter score to pull the Heat to within 29-21 (after a Dannon Handcuff 2-point conversion). Handcuff would score later with 5 minutes to go in the game and the score tightened to 29-27 after a failed two-point run effort, setting the stage for the final drive culminating in Johnson’s second touchdown as the Mustangs defense just could not come through in the clutch.

For the Heat defense, which stepped up in the 4th quarter equally as much as Wissler did, Fisi Tuatonga, in his first game back with the Heat this season, had a monster game, recording not only 10 tackles, but 3 of those for sacks on Mustang quarterback, Donavan Ard.
