EASTERN IDAHO 25  BOISE 24

BOISE – Kenny Clark dove across the Boise Speed goal line with 7 seconds remaining in the game to complete an improbable drive and vault the Eastern Idaho Lionz past the Boise Speed 25-24 at Eagle High School Saturday night.

The Lionz, who had to recover from a 21-13 early 4th quarter deficit and a 24-19 shortfall after the second of two Eric Harbison field goals, had less than two minutes to engineer the final drive behind the solid right arm of Todd Barber, who passed for 341 yards on the evening, including 153 yards on 6 receptions to the Lionz top receiver, Zac Johnson.

The irony of the two Harbison field goals that put the pressure on the Lionz to score a touchdown in the end, was that had Harbison, who was victimized by 3 poor center to holder exchanges on the 3 Speed extra points… 3 points that would have been the difference had they been converted.

Of course, in a 1-point game, there are a lot of “if only’s” that either team can look to. For the Lionz, they too struggled on conversions as the teams battled back and forth all game long.

With neither team’s rushing game being too dominant, the teams looked to the passing game to get it done. For the Speed, Brian Stogsdill had a solid outing, completing 6 of 11 for 149 yards. 5 of those passes went to star wide out, Jeremy Prussia, who was the recipient of a 59-yard catch and run play that pulled the Speed to within 7-6 with less than 3 minutes remaining in the half.  A key Lionz drive after that score, however, ensued as the Lionz were able to move down against the Speed defense for a late Nate Brown touchdown reception that, too, could be looked at as the difference-making drive in the game.

Josh Pettit and Braxton Mouser lead the Lionz defense with 7 tackles each. Pettit also recorded a sack and picked off Stogsdill for one of two team interceptions.  For the Speed, defensive back and all-time RMFL interception leader, Dane Knickrehm and linebacker, Bob Mares, exchanged roles.  Knickrehm lead the team in tackles with 6-/2 and Mares picked off Todd Barber twice in the game as the defenses struggled against some solid offensive performance.

Overall, however, Madison’s big drives and a 411 to 232 total net yard advantage were enough to eek out the one-point victory.
