MISSOULA – Former explosive Helena Titans
quarterback/receiver combo, Shane Jurasek and Dave Garza, burned the Titans on
3 touchdown connections as the Missoula Phoenix turned a 13-6 halftime lead
into a 34-12 route of the visiting Titans at Washington-Grizzly Stadium in
Missoula, Montana.
Jurasek, who is now in his
2nd season with the Phoenix, was joined by his favorite, and
record-setting target from this days in Helena, Dave Garza, just this season
and the two put on a scoring show.
Jurasek, would end up passing for 312 yards and 4 touchdowns passes as
well as rush for a 5th to lead an offense that would roll up 411
total net yards on the struggling Titan defense. Tyler Boaz caught 4 passes for
92 yards to lead all Phoenix receivers as Helena just didn’t’ seem to have an
answer for the Missoula passing game.
Missoula has been the
downfall for the Titans since coming into the RMFL in 2005. The Titans have
never beaten the Missoula franchise, losing for th 5th straight
game. The first two contests (in 2005)
were both nail-biting affairs won by then the Raptors by a single point. Last season, however, Missoula turned the
tides, winning handily both times (34-11 and 33-12), the second victory
eliminated the Titans from a playoff opportunity last season.
Although only allowing 12
points, the Phoenix defense did give up 288 total net yards to an improving
Titan offense, as developing quarterback, Jacob Pena, started to show some
promise with 122 yards passing, a touchdown and even a touchdown rushing to
help lead the Titans. Luke Barrett also looked good for Helena, with 83 yards
rushing on 15 carries as the Titan ground game was effective (34 rushes, 178
yards) for much of the game.
Tony Sanderson lead the
Phoenix with 6 tackles and Tiff Meyers and Spencer Steiner lead the Titans with
10 tackles each as the Titans clamped down on the Phoenix rushing game (only
112 net yards), at the expense, however, of the big passing game by Jurasek and
Garza.
