Game Summary/Box Score
April 14, 2007 Bear River Valley Rockets vs. Idaho Matadors

BEAR RIVER VALLEY 38 IDAHO 0

NAMPA – The Bear River Valley Rockets rushed for 270 yards and 22 first downs en route to a complete offensive and defensive domination of the host, Idaho Matadors 38-0, in Nampa, Idaho.

The game was scoreless until near the end of the 1st  quarter, when the Rockets star tailback, Mike Messinger, broke a 49-yard run to pay dirt, giving the Rockets the early 6-0 lead.  Early in the second quarter, Dave Williams, who rushed the most by far, 17 times, capped another Rocket drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.  Messinger, by virtue of 49 yards on one play would lead all rushers with 99 yards on only 5 carries, while the workhorse, Williams, would pick up 88 yards as the heir apparent to Nate Jackson, Messinger’s running mate in 2006 who vaulted for the Cache Valley Bears in the off-season.

Rocket quarterback, Mike Jenkins, was on as well; completing 12 of 19 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns against no interceptions on a near perfect afternoon in Western Idaho.  The Rockets were making due with a whole new receiving corps from last season’s group and they came to play.  Justin McDermeit (5 receptions, 53 yards), Marvin Mays (2 receptions, 59 yards, 1 touchdown) and ex-Nemesis, Cody Merritt (3 receptions, 43 yards, 1 touchdown) keyed a solid passing attak along with Jenkins.  All told, the Rockets would roll up 456 total net yards of offense on the Matadors home turf.

In 2006, the Bear River Valley Rockets were known for their offense, however, on this opening Saturday, their defense proved their mettle as well. Not only pitching a shut out against a potentially dangerous Matador offense, but also holding Idaho to 154 total net yards (88 passing, 66 rushing) as the Matadors, who did have a pre-season game with AAA, Idaho Falls, simply could not stick one in the end zone against an active Rocket defense.  That defense was lead by new star, Tyler DeBry, who recorded 7-1/2 tackles, including a sack to lead all players for the game.

Interestingly, there were no interceptions thrown by either team in the contest.

For the Matadors, off-season acquisition, Anthony Pomerlee, did look pretty good, rushing for 65 yard on only 10 carries and could be the biggest key to their future offensive success.  Neither quarterback, Tom Bennett or Jarod Briggs, could muster much of a passing game, however.  Combined, the two were only 5 of 23 attempts on the day, giving up 3 sacks on the day as the Matador offense must re-group for the next opponent.
