Summary/Box Score
April 14, 2007 Idaho Falls Mustangs vs. Utah Wolverines
UTAH WOLVERINES 49 IDAHO FALLS 14
SALT
LAKE CITY – In one
mid-April spring evening at Juan Diego High School in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Utah Wolverines did two things they had never done before.
The Utah Wolverines had
never scored more points in one game (49), nor won by as large a margin (35)…
as the Wolverines overcame an early 7-0 deficit to score 42 unanswered points
over the next 3 quarters to embarrass the Mustangs on the road.
The Wolverines spent 60
minutes of football proving that the Idaho Falls defense, ranked 10th
in the AAA in 2006, had not improved after all as they racked up 425 total net
yards to go along with 7 touchdowns in a complete dismantling of a Mustang team
that was making their first trip to the Wolverines home field in 3 seasons.
Wolverine new star
receiver, Joe Mapson, caught touchdown passes of 65 yards and 12 yards and then
returned a punt 78 yards for a score, all in the first half to lead the
Wolverines to a 21-7 halftime lead.
Wolverine quarterback, Dean
Fountaine, also set a Wolverine passing mark, passing for 245 yards and three
scores and scrambled in for another midway through the 4th quarter
to cap the 42 point scoring burst by a Wolverine team that had, in the past,
had trouble scoring in the RMFL.
Five different running
backs also added 188 rushing yards and another 2 rushing scores as the
Wolverines just seemed capable of moving the ball at any time during the
contest.
The Mustangs did get an
early lead when Donavan Ard capped the team’s first drive with a 26-yard
touchdown to his favorite target, Brandon Reed.
At the time it looked like the Mustangs, ranked 3rd in the
pre-season to the Wolverines 6th, were going to prove the ranking
and do what they had done in three meetings prior, win.
It was short lived,
however, as on the first play of the Wolverines next drive, Mapson caught the
65-yard bomb from Fountaine and the Wolverines charge began.
The always tough, Wolverine
defense, was even tougher this evening, with Matt Shoda and Jason Potter
leading the way with 5 tackles each and Dustin McCammon and Bryson Hayward
getting key interceptions in the game. Mustang quarterback, Donavan Ard, and
the Mustang offense was able to 287 net yards, however, just could not keep up
the scoring output of Fountaine, Mapson and the re-vamped Wolverine offense.
