Summary/Box Score
April 14, 2007 Eastern Idaho Lionz vs. Muddogs
EASTERN IDAHO 49 MUDDOGS 22
WEST VALLEY CITY – Troy Dougherty…who? Eastern Idaho’s, Todd Barber, who has spent
the last several years backing up 2-time RMFL MVP, Troy Dougherty, made a
statement in his first game as the starting quarterback for the newly re-named,
Eastern Idaho Lionz. Barber passed for 352 yards and 3 touchdowns and ran for a
4th to lead the Lionz over the defending AA champion, Muddogs, at
Granger High School in West Valley City, Utah.
It was the Muddogs,
however, that jumped out quickly, getting an 11-yard touchdown pass from the
2006 All-star game, MVP, Jordan Kjar to the team’s top receiver, Chris Hooper
before fans, who had suffered through a 1-1/2 hour game start delay due to an
officials coordination issue, could sit down with their nachos. On the play, however, the Muddogs title hopes
took a big blow, as Kjar suffered what could be a season-ending collar bone
injury and was unable to return to lead the Muddog offense.
The Muddogs, however, did
not seem to miss a beat, as back-up quarterback (the other star receiver), Matt
Thornton, found Chris Liddiard on a 27-yard score midway through the 1st
period to give the upstart Muddogs a 13-0 lead over the 2006 AAA championship,
runner-up, Lionz.
But from there on in,
Barber, and his star receiver, Zac Johnson, took over the game. On the Lionz ensuing drive, Barber found
Johnson (8 receptions, 158 yards, 3 touchdowns) on a 29 yard score to pull the
Lionz to within 13-7. Early in the
second quarter, the two would hook-up again from 45 yards out to give the Lionz
a temporary and tentative 15-13 lead (the Lionz went for a two point
conversion).
The Muddogs, however, would
lead again as Thornton connected with Liddiard for a second scoring toss of 29
yards. Thornton would end up passing for
110 yards, 102 of them to Liddiard… ironically, his replacement after having to
move to quarterback.
After re-taking the lead,
20-13, however, it was all Lionz the rest of the way. The Lionz would out-score the Muddogs 34-2 in
the remaining 2-1/2 quarters, including 14 points in the final 30 seconds of
the first half to run away with the win.
The Lionz welcomed Ammon Kaonohi
to the team in 2006 and he responded with 6 receptions for 113 yards to
contribute to a Lions offense that rolled up 465 total net yards against the
newly promoted Muddogs.
The Lionz defense was lead by all-star, James Huml, who recorded 5-1/2 tackles including 3 quarterback sacks to take the early RMFL sack lead in week #1. The Muddog defense, which was very effective for most of the first half, was lead by defensive captain, Kyto Khouangrasvongsay, who recorded 5-1/2 tackles. Chris Miles, Nick Meza and Lance Paxman had 4 a piece.
