Game Summary/Box Score
April 14, 2007 Cache Valley Bears vs. Utah Heat

CACHE VALLEY 31 UTAH HEAT 18

TOOELE – The Cache Valley fought through a tough first half in which they were only able to struggle to a 7-0 lead, to take charge in the second half against a spirited and underrated Utah Heat team on their way to a 31-18 road victory, setting up the big show down with the Rhino-Raiders in week #2.

The Bears received all-around solid play from both their offensive and defensive units, rolling up 341 total net yards and holding the Heat scoreless for the first 3-1/2 quarters before giving up two offensive and one defensive cosmetic score during the late stages of the game.

For 2-1/2 quarters, however, the game was highly in doubt.  After picking up the first touchdown on a short Pete Shields touchdown run, early in the second quarter, the slim 7-0 lead held up as both defenses stiffened in key situations until midway through the third quarter when Bears quarterback, Ryan Harris found the RMFL’s Fastest Man, Anthony Stewart for the first of his two touchdowns on the afternoon.  Nate Jackson rumbled through the middle of the Heat defense near the end of the third quarter pushing the Bears lead to 21-0 at the end of the third.

Stewart caught his second touchdown pass, this time from the Bears second quarterback, Caleb Eastman, to secure the Bears at 28-0.  The Heat, however, would score 3 touchdowns in the final 6 minutes of play, including two touchdown receptions from their most explosive receiver, Brian Simmons.  David Fuentes, also picked off Eastman with just over 5 minutes remaining to account for the Heats second score, pulling the Heat to within 28-12 at the time.

For the Bears, 5 different receivers caught more than 3 passes for 25 yards or more as the offense spread the wealth in a balanced attack.  Nate Jackson lead Cache Valley running backs with 5 rushes for 61 yards and the score and Jeremy Crookston lead the Bears defense with 7 tackles, including 2 quarterback sacks as the Bears got to Heat quarterback, Jeff Wissler 4 times on the afternoon.

Even in a loss, the Heat got some good news in the resurrection of their passing game. Wissler passed for 287 yards on 18 completions, 7 receptions and 107 yards of that to Jeff Johnson.  In 2006, the Heat only managed 329 total net passing yards in 9 games the entire season.  Fuentes, who made the biggest play of the game for the Heat with the touchdown off the interception, also lead all Heat tacklers with 5 (tied with Lika Opeta).
