HELENA – The Bitterroot Blaze began their
quest of a 2007 AA title with an overwhelming road victory over the host Helena
Titans 45-0 in Helena Saturday afternoon
The relentless Blaze
offense drove up and down the field on 6 straight possessions of the first half
en route to a 38-0 halftime lead; and then setting cruise control for the
second half for the route of the talented, but rebuilding, Helena Titans.
Record-setting Blaze
running back from 2006, Justin Nixon, was held out much of the second half, but
rushed for 85 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown to lead a rushing assault of
160 yards by the Blaze offense. Blaze
quarterback, Buckie Brawley, and the Bitterroot passing game, notorious for low
numbers, did account for 139 passing yards and 2 of the teams 6 touchdowns.
In all, 7 different Blaze
players scored in the game as the Blaze were able to get their entire roster
involved in what was a pretty good rivalry in 2006.
The stifling Blaze defense
also came to play.
The Titans offense, which
had been very potent in years past, was held to a meager 91 total net yards as Blaze
star linebacker, Jamie Jones (6-1/2 tackles, 2 sacks) lead the way. The Blaze defense even got in on the scoring
when Brent Mohan, scooped up a Titan fumble and rumbled 25 yards late in the
first quarter to put the Blaze up comfortably by a 21-0 margin at the time.
The Titans did find a
couple of diamonds in the rough as new acquisition, Tiff Meyers picked up 8
tackles and a sack from the linebacker position and were glad to see one of the
RMFL’s all-time tackle leaders, Spencer Steiner, back at linebacker and picking
up some tackles. In all, the Titans did
record 4 sacks on the day and look to build on the defensive successes as their
offense develops.
