RMFL – The “Kamas Valley” Muddogs splashed onto the scene in 2005 with a charismatic owner, a great playing location at Kamas High School and…a lot of hope.
Mid-season, 2006, they are officially down to two out of three… hope.
Effective, Tuesday, April 25th, RMFL Commissioner, Jared Neumeier gave the Muddogs two alternatives: keep owner Ed Descamps on as General Manager and be suspended by the RMFL for the season; or… move forward without Ed Descamps and repair a history of contention, lies (to the RMFL Morgan School District, Salt Lake Officials, and the Muddog players) and a succession of unpaid debts.
Needless to say, the Muddogs will move forward as a team, without Ed Descamps.
The new Muddog management will be comprised initially of coaches, John Thornton and Jared Emerick and players, Kyto Khouang and Chris Hooper; although Thornton, who is expected to lead the Muddog “Managing Board”, expects to get other team leaders involved as well as the team moves forward.
According to Commissioner Neumeier, specifically, the “three serious and unacceptable strikes” against Descamps were:
1. Descamps bounced his RMFL league fees check; then continued to lie about sending a replacement cashier’s check, refusing to give the league a tracking number until deadline violations resulted in a $250 team fine. The players finally took up a collection and sent a player representative to Pocatello on the last day of the final deadline to cover for Descamps.
2. Descamps failed to pay Morgan High school for their home game of April 8th. Descamps promised school representative, Terry Allen, on numerous occasions that he would immediately cover the unpaid debt. Finally, Descamps resorted to the same lie used on the RMFL; he claimed the “check was in the mail” however, refused to yield any tracking number to Allen. To date, there has still been no check or tracking number.
3. Descamps lied to his coaches and players about the status of the teams white away jerseys that players contributed players fees towards the purchase of. Descamps also refused to provide the name of the outlet he was supposedly getting the jerseys from. He had told his players for a while “they were done, I just have to pick them up.” Yet, he would not divulge where they were “done” at.
Neumeier also said that Descamps also supposedly lost the ability to receive e-mail, mysteriously did not show because of a “Family emergency” for the April 8th game, sticking Morgan and the officials with unpaid debts… and now, the rest of the team will assume those debts. “It’s a lot of things”, Neumeier stated, “you can even start with him lying about how many players he had to go to Missoula for the playoff game last year…, he even made up more lies to cover those lies. The whole situation has become unbelievably ridiculous. The RMFL and semi-pro football has no room for this kind of integrity abuse. It’s over.”
Today, Neumeier attempted to contact Ed Descamps to resolve at least the “lied about having the white jerseys completed” issue, however, Descamps was not willing to take the call.
Neumeier also made it clear that the Muddog new managing board did not ask or petition to take over the team, “this was a decision I made in the best interests of the RMFL and all teams involved. I don’t have the authority to “fire” an owner, obviously, but I do have the authority to suspend a team. This is a situation where I believed we could move forward…with the Muddogs… as long as the team found honest, responsible leadership.”
The new Muddog management does not expect to miss a beat. They are currently working to immediately clear the Morgan High School debt, a debt that was quickly going to become an issue for the Vipers, as well. The Vipers shared the Morgan High School field with the Muddogs and the school’s own Morgan Marauders.
Neumeier has given the Muddogs until May 6th, one week before their next home game to have pre-paid for the field for that game AND completely paid up their Utah officiating debt for all of the season, including coordination fees.
“I want to work with these guys coming in”, Neumeier said, “however, if they don’t have Morgan caught up by Thursday of this week, they will forfeit Saturday’s game. If they don’t have the other debts covered by May 6th, they will forfeit the May 13th game. We are not asking a lot, we are simply asking that they operate with the same responsibility as the other 21 RMFL teams. These are good guys that are taking over… and I’m confident they will be a great improvement for this team.”
