April 22, 2006 Utah Wolverines at Cache Valley Bears @ Logan High School
CACHE VALLEY 28 UTAH WOLVERINES 12
LOGAN – By Kevin Nielsen, Herald Journal
The Cache Valley Bears played three
good quarters of football to win 28-12 against the Draper-based Utah Wolverines
Saturday night at Logan High’s Crimson Field
In their first-ever home game, the
Bears got behind after a bad snap on a punt that turned into a safety and,
subsequently, a 38-yard field goal by the Wolverines.
From then on out, Ryan Harris threw
the home team to a lead, and the running game ran out the clock for the Bears.
“We’re still trying to get everybody
to click,” free safety Dan Sundstrom said. “But its
nice to know you can always run, so you’re able to control the ball and the
clock.”
The Bears offense was balanced
through the second and early parts of the third quarters, but after Cache
Valley got up by 10, the play calling changed.
The early 5-0 deficit wasn’t too
much of a hurdle for Cache Valley’s offense. The Bears drove 60 yards after the
Utah field goal, and scored on a 15-yard reception by Anthony Stewart. David
Fiefia ran for the two-point conversion, giving the Bears the lead for good.
Ryan Harris threw for another
touchdown in the second quarter, this time he hooked up with Norvel Young on a
34-yard pass to the sideline.
Young finished the game with two
touchdown catches and 129 yards receiving.
“We’re still new and we’re all
trying to get together,” Young said. “It was our first home game, and we had to
try to get the win.”
After Young’s second touchdown of
the game, the Bears remained 10 points up for the majority of the third and
fourth quarters.
Staying up wasn’t too difficult,
since the Wolverines only gained one first down in the second half and the
Bears could run at will.
After not getting a sack or an
interception in the first half, the Bears came up with three sacks, all for at
least 10 yards, and an interception deep in Wolverine territory.
After the Bears punted for the first
time in the game with four minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Wolverines
had a first down on their 20-yard line.
The Wolverines tried to sneak in a
screen pass, but Steve Waelty threw it right at Bears’ defensive end Tyler
Olsen. Olsen picked off the pass and returned the ball to the Wolverines’
1-yard line.
“I owed it to the team,” Olsen said.
“It made up for a bad play.”
Justin Oswald punched it in the end
zone on first down, putting the Bears up 28-12, and allowing them to rest some
players.
Defensively, former Aggie D.J.
Brookter led the team in tackles, followed by former Aggie teammate Matt Wiser.
Vaea Fiefia, Oswald and Jarom Fano all had sacks for the Bears. The Wolverines
finished with 14 total yards offense in the second half.
It was a true team game for the
Bears as three different quarterbacks lined up under center, and plenty of
players played both ways for Cache Valley.
“Its impossible for a couple guys to pull something like this off,” Sundstrom said. “We appreciate the fans and the support they gave, as well as the players on the field.”.
