VIPERS 17 GRAND JUNCTION 12

GRAND JUNCTION – James Flynn, the Vipers multi-talented offense, defense and special teams player, answered an RMFL record-setting and unprecedented touchdown play by the Grand Junction Scorpions with an 80-yard kick-off return that short-lived a Scorpion 7-3 lead and lead the Vipers past the Scorpions by a 17-12 final in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The Scorpions’, Garret Chaffee, pulled the most rare of feats in the most rare of ways.  Vipers place-kicker, Bryce Kennington attempted a 40-yard field goal which fell a few yards short early in the third quarter. Chaffee, playing deep back, elected to catch the short field goal 7-yards deep in his end zone and run it out.  After zig-zagging the field and picking up key blocks, 107 yards later, Chaffee was crossing the goal line for the Scorpions first score, giving them a 7-3 lead.  A lead that would hold up for but on more play… before Flynn’s heroics.

The game was almost scoreless for the entire first half, except for a 28-yard Kennington field goal. Once again, Viper running back, Josh Christensen, lead the Viper charge with another outstanding effort.  Christensen rushed 16 times for 101 yards and a late third quarter touchdown that pushed the Vipers 10-7 lead up to 17-7, giving the team a little more cushion.  Christensen also lead the team in receiving, catching two Skyler Sherwood passes for 33 yards for a 134-yard effort from scrimmage for the day.

It turned out to be a much needed cushion, as a late fourth quarter drive by the Scorpions ended up with a Donnie Holmes Jr. touchdown pass reception from Mike Christensen that accounted for the final result.

For the Scorpions, the kicking game could be credited with the “assist” on the loss.  Failing to convert two extra points and a short field goal was the difference in the game for the Scorpions… kicks the Vipers and Viper all-star place-kicker, Bryce Kennington converted for the win for the visitors.
