Game Summary/Box Score
April 15, 2006 Missoula Raptors at Great Falls Gladiators @ Memorial
Stadium
MISSOULA 17 GREAT FALLS 9
GREAT FALLS – (By LEE VERNOY
Great Falls Tribune Sports Writer)
It is rare for Missoula Raptors quarterback Shane Jurasek and Great Falls
Gladiators head coach Mike Morgan to be on the same page on one particular
subject.
But both men agree on one thing: Missoula’s 17-9 Rocky Mountain Football League
win over the Gladiators Saturday night at Memorial Stadium was just plain ugly,
albeit for different reasons.
Jurasek was his own critic. “I sucked. God, I sucked!” he said as he left the
field after the game. “(We won) thanks to the O-line and Gavin Johnson.”
Johnson was the Raptors’ workhorse, scoring twice and rushing for 70 yards on
15 carries, most coming after a second-half thunderstorm kept players in their
respective locker rooms for an additional 25 games after half-time.
Jurasek, in contrast, completed seven passes in 22 tries for 112 yards. He was
sacked five times for 40 yards — 2½ times by Keon
Pinckney — and was picked off once by Eric McGowan.
“If it wasn’t for (Johnson), we’d have probably lost this one,” Jurasek said.
“(The Gladiators’) defense played incredibly hard. Kept us at
bay.
“We just need to get our offense … I don’t know what to say,” the 26-year-old
veteran QB added. “I’m just frustrated right now. That’s the worst game I’ve
played in years.”
Jurasek attributed his performance to a variety of things, including the
weather: “It wasn’t my night. (The Gladiators’ defense) hit us good, I didn’t
hit my receivers when they were open, it was cold and the ball got a little wet
a couple of times.”
Morgan, on the other hand, was visibly upset on several occasions during the
game, and it carried over into the locker room afterward.
“It was an ugly game, and we paid for it,” Morgan said. “I don’t care how good
your defense is … when they’re on the field for three-quarters of the game, they’re going to get winded."
The defense indeed did their part. Besides McGowan’s first half interception
and the five sacks of Jurasek, they forced three fumbles and recovered two.
“The offense has got to wake up,” the Gladiators’ mentor added. “(Sterling)
Wynn’s a trooper; he’s going to keep punching, and if we can get down the
field, we’ve got Milo’s (David Milodragovich) leg, the offense has got to wake
up.”
Milo did his part, putting the Gladiators on the board midway through the
second quarter with a 22-yard chip shot to make the score 10-3, and Wynn’s
44-yard romp from scrimmage with 9:44 left in the game brought the Gladiators
within a TD and a two-point conversion. Wynn finished the game with 80 yards on
16 carries, and caught a 10-yard pass in the fourth to help keep that final
drive alive.
But Johnson’s scoring runs — a one-yarder in the
first and 11-yard romp in the third, conjoined with Raphael Roberts’ 38-yard
field goal in the first — had already done their damage. The Gladiators made a
last ditch effort to tie the score in the final minutes, but made a costly
fumble right at the two-minute warning — one of three lost fumbles and five
turnovers — that sealed their fate.
